Murphy v Gray, the battle continues

http://www.labour.org.uk/jim-murphy-speech-conference

Murphy's speech to Labour Party Conference

A nice try Jim, but no cigar.

Considering, in Jim Murphy's words, that he (Gray) is the next First Minister of Scotland, its interesting that the Labour Party website has not yet got round to posting Iain Gray's speech....

Ah here it is, in all its glory

http://www.labour.org.uk/iain-gray-speech-conference

There is so much wrong with his speech I will leave readers to look themselves. But here's a Gray marker for a U-turn on the Referendum issue...

"The day may well come when the people of Scotland want a referendum to settle their constitutional future once and for all. But not now, in the midst of a recession. And not on a question rigged by the SNP".
Aventinian

If Jim Murphy loses his seat at the General Election, maybe he'll start his campaign to be the next first minister of Scotland. He'd certainly be better at it than anyone else I can see on Labour's front bench.

Ah, but "once and for all" isn't really true - which is one of my central problems with holding a referendum on this issue. There's nothing ideologically to stop the SNP et al demanding one every twenty, maybe even ten, years - perhaps even more frequently. They're hardly just going to roll over and reject their raison d'etre because the public tell them to get stuffed: they've been told that time and again in elections and opinion polls, yet still they carry on.

Talk about damning a man with faint praise!

Yes, Ave. Just like the Tories keep putting up candidates in Scotland in GE's (tee hee).

I watched Iain Gray's speech to the conference. He says "My Scotland would not be a country where two year-old Brandon Muir dies at the hands of his mother’s boyfriend..."

To use a child's horrific death to score political points is abhorrent.

as is scoring points bragging about releasing mass murderer's.
Stevie

Read it.  Not bad but not smart enough for the smart folk and above the heads of the dumb folk.

Still... okay.

Having said that, I saw him at the Megrahi stint in the parliament.  Hardly a riveting performance or personality.

That of course is nothing new with Labour as far back as I can remember.

I think you'll find most the point scoring was being done by those in opposition.

I've not heard/read all of the speech, but if that's right enough then it's fairly disgusting to insinuate that he, as first minister, would have been able to prevent this case.  If you see what I mean!?

no, i think not, memebers of the FREEEEEEDOM party and it's supporters have been like the cat that got the cream since the convicted mass murderer was released. they have been shouting from the rooftops about, what they think was the right decision despite it being very wrong.
Alasdair

You mean in response to the political point scoring being relentlessly pursued by the opposition parties.

Don't get me wrong, opposition parties exist to ask questions and bring governemnts to task, yet what they've been doing is using the situation to score political points.

If the decision was so heinous why was a vote of no confidence not sought? and why is the committee reviewing the decision not looking at the decision itself instead of purely looking at the process that led to the decision?

good for you, you have a basic grasp of politics.

the snp and it's supporters are all over this stupid decision like a bad rash. are you suggesting the snp did not try to capitalise on a (wrong) decision made by it's justice cooncilor. all these millions of people worldwide celebrating this wonderful act and what did the snp do according to you, said nothing and just let the oppostion and critics do the shouting.

either your stupid or the snp PR machine is even more stupid than i first thought.

- hardly.

This attempt to use the death of a child backfired as there was a storm of protest locally about the Gray smear which happened when Labour was in power on Dundee City Council.
