New Law on Elections

A new law on elections has been passed to force council elections and Holyrood elections to be held on different days.

Watch council election turnout plummet to well under 20%.

The UK Government has so far not been persuaded by continuing Scottish Government calls to devolve powers, so that the Scottish Parliament has powers over the running of Holyrood elections.

So what if they do? Personally I care far more about having an informed electorate, a proper campaign and an actual focus on local issues to a high turnout.

If people don't want to vote, why should anyone care?

It is, of course, a question of 'why so?' - I've yet to hear a convincing argument made for it. You're wanting the change, it's down to you to make a case to answer in support.

I don't call "I voted Labour, because I've always voted Labour" an informed electorate.

Did you watch the fiasco of two years ago?

Hopefully campaigning and discussing local issues, rather than having them submerged under the Scottish Parliament elections, will reduce some of that sort of thinking.

Unless there's some sort of reason that pertained particularly to the elections being run by the Scotland Office rather than the Scottish Executive that caused this fiasco, I don't see how that supports your argument at all.

It's rather like suggesting that because the Metropolitan Police keeps cocking up, we should hand over the powers of policing our nation's capital to the Fire Brigade.

It does, however, seem like a pretty good argument for looking into ways to improve the policing of the UK's capital, don't you think?

As for "why so?" how about the recommendations of the Electoral Commission's enquiry into the fiasco of two years ago? Why not adopt the solutions suggested by recognised experts in the field?

It is nothing like that at all.  For a start, I was talking about transferring powers from one parliament to another.  In your example you are talking about transferring power from an organisation to another one that carries out an entirely different function altogether.
