Pro Independence Editorial from the Scotsman!!

Almost choked on my cornflakes this morning, reading George Kerevan's article in the Scotsman which is here:

Unfortunately you need to be a subscriber to read all of it. But in summary it contrasts the lacklustre start of Labour to the long election campaign ahead to that of the SNP; how Susan Deacon would probably have made a better First Minister than McLeish or McConnell; how all Labour's best talent are languishing on the backbenches; how the SNP are using "intellect" to initiate new policies etc

But the bit that got me was the final part (which I'll transcribe here) with emphasis added:

Quote:
"There's a sizeable minority of Scots who favour independence (myself included). Thinking Nationalists spend their time trying to figure a way of convincing our fellow countrymen and women to join us. That means (1) offering a way to make their lives better in some concrete way and (2) disspelling their legitimate fear of change. The best way of doing this is for an SNP Executive to prove it can run Scotland better than the present bunch. In Campbell Martin's utopia, compromise, efficiency and persuasion are dirty words, which is why he resorts to negative criticism."

Eh? When has the Scotsman or its journalists tried to convince anyone of the benefits of independence? Has this always been the case? If not it is probably a positive development.

To be fair, before the Barclay brothers got a hold of the Scotsman, it was a lot more neutral on Independence and Devolution than it is now. Maybe it's now swinging back in the other direction to redress the balance now it's been sold.

The Scotsman has probably the best website of any daily newspaper in Scotland - I hope it does become a bit more level-headed RE Independence soon as it can only be good for the movement. I believe journalists at this particular paper were also told to keep their Nationalism 'under wraps' while they were writing their pieces. Of course, Andrew 'Union' Neil would have played a large part in that also.

It's actually a majority:

I think George Kerevan is a member of the SNP, not sure though. Another regular columnist, Duncan Hamilton, is a former SNP MSP. They've been writing for the Scotsman for quite a while...

I'd forgotten about him, but you're right he has a regular column there.

I don't know whether Kerevan is a member of the SNP or not, but it was just surprising I thought, for a newspaper that is so adept at traducing the idea of independence with all the usual unionist rhetoric, for which it is famous.

I think he is still a member. Remember, these are just two columnists. They can be used to give an appearance of balance when the over-riding philosophy of the paper is still Unionist. Still, maybe things are slowly changing since Johnston Press have taken over.

Kerevan is an ex-socialist who was a Labour councillor in Edinburgh and has made an ideological journey to supporting a free market economy within an independent Scotland.

As such he is a right of centre nationalist and would be expected to be critical of spartist numbskulls like Campbell Martin.

Johnston Press just want to make money (you could argue that they're in the wrong sector!) and are not ideologically driven in the same way as the Barclays were - a good thing.

George Kerevan in the Scotsman, 12 May 2005. Interesting stuff...
