Renewables

I was just wondering if anyone knows how much renewables could be worth to Scotland in the long run?

To what extent can it offset the enevitable decline in the oil industry?

Sorry if this has been coverd before but hey im new lol.

It probably wouldn't do us much good at all if we get rid of nuclear power too.

You'll probably need to do quite a bit of digging if you're looking for solid data.

Here are a few links off the top of my head:

Institution of Civil Engineers:
http://www.ice.org.uk/knowledge/index.asp
Institution of Mechanical Engineers
http://www.imeche.org.uk
Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers
http://www.ieee.org/portal/site
The Renewable Energy Association UK
http://www.r-p-a.org.uk/home.fcm

Though these will probably offer too much information (mainly technical) but there should be economic info buried somewhere within all that (I suspect).

If your justing looking for general info then searching through the press is probably better - though you'll need to try and sift out any 'spin' thats present.

Haven't got any real data myself - just a few thoughts:

I'd argue it would be only worth something if we are in a position to export something for profit. ie energy, equipment or knowledge. Thereafter its a case of balancing our environmental aims while trying to keep the cost of energy down IMO - because electricity basically runs everything.

For in-depth opinion (minus the technical jargon) - you'll need to go through the press and relevant journals/magazines IMO.

I'd argue that if it means we don't have to import materials to generate electricity, then it is worth something. And more than just the monetary value. Energy security is worth much.
