2011 census

Apologies if this has been covered before.

Haven't posted here for a while and trust you are all well.

Were you aware that the English version of the census will allow the writer to describe himself as White and English or White and "other British" whereas your version, quite righlty, allows for people to describe themselves as white and Scots, English, Welsh or Irish.

Take a look at the draft questions on the respective websites.

I know there are many Scots living in England (mostly in Westminster running our Country) but I reckon you lot and the Welsh and Irish will have a problem with this.

As I say, sorry if you've seen this before.

Having said that we might be independent of each other by then!!

bluearmyboy...it does look a bit stupid...however in 2011 we will not be contributing to the Westminster census...we may have a Holyrood Scottish census at that time though....
IF Convenor

Even after independence there will be many Scots in England and vice versa.

Of course, the census questions will probably have to be redrafted after independence anyway.

The London Branch of Plaid Cymru had a campaign a year or so ago inorder to get a question allowing people to descirbe themselves as Welsh on the census forms for England.

I believe a question should also be asked on the forms for England about the number of Welsh speakers in England. This isn't actually currently known but is believed to possibly be in the 10'000's.

£10 says otherwise.

Anyway, since when were Scottish, English, Welsh or Irish ethnic labels?

I assume this part is optional. I unfortunately can't remember much about what I put down in censuses.

The interesting thing is that there are two different and distinct census forms; one for you and one presumably for E W &NI.

Billalba ; you already DO have a different form and
Cymro, looks like your efforts have failed on the English version. In the Scottish one you CAN say you are White Welsh.

From my perspective, the English are often sinned against, but in this case it appears to have gone the other way.

Pip

It's a step forwards that we've got 'English' on there.

bluearmyboy...I am aware that we have a different census form...what I am pointing out is that just because England will have a census in 2011 it doesnt necessary mean that Scotland will have one...

They are run by three organisations: the Office of Ntnl Statistics in E&W, The General Register Office in Scotland and the Statistics & Research Agency in NI.

The census in this country has been conducted every ten years since 1801, except 1941; I doubt anything is going to change. The GRO are already planning it (http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/census/index.html)

I think the forms for Wales will be different to those in England - for one thing they'll rightly be available in Welsh. Out of curiosity will they be available in Gaelic and Scots in Scotland?

Also, a question will be on the paper here in Wales asking if we regard ourselves as Welsh etc. Though apparently this still won't be the case in England unless they select "others". So there must be different forms produced for Wales.

I don't actually know. I'd assume they'd do them in Gaelic. I remember last time around, getting emailed the Ulster-Scots Census - which really was making the whole think ridiculous, talking about "quit nummer ae flushin yuffies hae ye in yer hoose" and the like.

As far as I knew, government documents are produced in Welsh accross the UK and it has a higher status than Gaelic in that regard.
