Panel Discussion on the Act of Union and its effects on Scottish Culture
Scotland has always had a unique cultural identity, and even after a binding union with England in 1707, Scotland retained many aspects of its culture.
This debate will examine contributing factors to the Union and its subsequent impact on Scottish culture and identity.
Panel members will address how this year’s tercentenary of the Union might affect Scottish (and English) culture in the future, and discuss how the political relationship between Scotland and England will develop.
The panel will include Donald Smith, Douglas Watt and Nat Edwards. Donald Smith, Director of the Scottish Storytelling Centre and Chair of the Literature Forum for Scotland, is the author of The English Spy, a new novel depicting Daniel Defoe's time as a spy for the Union. Douglas Watt is the author of The Price of Scotland, the first in-depth financial perspective on the Darien Scheme. Nat Edwards has recently travelled to the site of Darien to unearth what is left of the Scottish settlement, and has shared his experiences in his upcoming book, Caledonia's Last Stand.
