Glasgow Commonwealth GamesSo Glasgow got it for 2014. People happy about this? What about those who believe in a Republic? Would you support something like this. Personally I've always prefered the Commonwealth Games to the Olympics given that Wales can compete in its own right.

I'm not personally very interested in athletics, but I don't think it has anything to do with republicanism. What's the connection?

Indeed, there are republics in the Commonwealth... such as India (and it's New Delhi who host the Games in 2010), and Nigeria to name two examples.

Well it clearly does. There is another thread since been started in the News Section but in brief. There are people out there who obviously want to see a Republic. Now, upon a republic being declared would they wish to see Scotland out of the Commonwealth. There are Republics in the Commonwealth but they choose to be there.

i am extremely happy that Glasgow got the commonwealth games,though in my mind there was never any doubt that we would. Apart from the simple opportunity of being able to show off our city on the world stage it will mean a legacy of new facilities and other projects that will be of use long after 2014.
If Scotland were to become independent there is no question in my mind that we would remain part of the commonwealth,
From the commonwealth of nations website:"The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 53 independent sovereign states consulting and co-operating in the common interests of their peoples and in the promotion of international understanding and world peace."
now who could possibly be against that?
as far as the monarchy goes the understood SNP platform is that if their was public demand there would be a referendum to decide whether scotland becomes a republic,and this of course would have absolutlely nothing to do with member ship of the commonwealth.
Because the monarchy doesnt actually have an impact on people's everyday lives,and we live in a liberal democracy where they couldnt even if they wanted to, i dont think there will be much demand for getting rid of them, its not that people support them,its just that they dont oppose them that much.

The desire for Scotland, or Britain, to become a republic has nothing whatsoever to do with leaving the Commonwealth.
I'd rather Britain became a republic. Were Scotland to become independent, I'd rather it became a republic. In neither case would I want the country to leave the commonwealth.

I agree with you regarding wishing Wales/Scotland to remain in the Commonwealth, for me I place more importance on the independence bit than on the Republic bit. If Wales voted to be a Constitutional Monarchy I wouldn't be too worried - the right to be a Republic if we wished would be good enough for me. But many do see the Commonwealth as something unacceptable. Was just wondering how this would affect things thats all.

What has being a Republic got to do with the Commonwealth or the Commonwealth Games? The majority of countries in the Commonwealth are Republics - of the 53 Commonwealth members, 32 of them are Republics - including India, its largest member, Pakistan and South Africa. Only 21 members of the Commonwealth are monarchies and five have their own monarchies - Brunei, Lesotho, Malaysia, Swaziland, and Tonga.
And you don't have to be a former British colony to be in the Commonwealth - Mozambique and Cameroon are in the Commonwealth and their are countries who wish to join, such as Israel and Rwanda.

I know most are Republics. I was wondering whether Sottish Republicans would want Scotland to remain in the Empire, Republics who are in the Commonwealth accept the Queen as head of the Commonwealth. Many Republicans I assume wouldn't want to remain in the Commonwealth and was wondering what the general consensus was.
Parts of Cameroon where in the Empire for a period. British Cameroon came into existence after the Germans had to give up all their colonies after WW1. The German Colony of Cameroon was divided between the French and the British.
Israel does have an 'excuse' given that Paliestine was a former British Mandate, this happened for the same reason as Cameroon in fact. Mozamique is an excpetion as Ruanda would be.
