Our Scots HeritageIn response to Jimboneheid's call on another thread, I'm opening up a Scots Heritage thread to discuss all things from our history that affects us, be it language, people, events ... whatever ...
The last thread I opened was eventually abused and turned personal ... so I implore all participants to try not to get into a slanging match. I know I can't prevent anyone taking part ... nor would I want to ... but I for one intend to ignore Coolio if he comes on this thread. He's not worth wasting my time on frankly ... and any moderator or Idi Admin is welcome to think what they like about that! Just let's not carry on like eejits in public.
So there you go ... draw your claymores and let's be having you ...

When I say draw your claymores ... that wasn't an invitation to a battle ... or scribble little broadswords here ...

What a terrible and contradictory way to open a thread. I can only imagine that your opening gambit and use of the name 'coolio' desopite being asked not to use it by the person in question is an attempt to rehash old battles.
The rest of us are bored with it. We have plenty of places to discuss heritage and history, if you want to open up a forum on that then ask the mods, if not then I would think it is impossible to include all history and heritage in one thread. especially one with such a hostile opening post.
I for one will prefer to remain discussing history and heritage in the appropriate place and get involved in debnates that have subject matter rather than try to oput so many subjects into one thread.

I'd be delighted to have a place to discuss Scottish history away from people who believe that every slight, however tiny or imaginary, is a legitimate excuse for them to comandeer an entire discussion with their wounded self-righteous thin-skinned pride.
I had been wondering whether it might be a good idea to start a "General Banter about Scottish History" thread in the General Banter section where certain individuals have said they will never go.

excellent. I've just been googling local history and been reading some fascinating stuff. I personally feel out depth here. i'm not an academic, am not well read up on history. although in the past have played my part to contributing organising events, lectures etc on Scottish History.

I humbly concur, I live out with Scotland and OS is the best place to come to in order to keep up to date with whats going on in the country.
Unfortunately, the serious threads have been almost all commandeered by intolerant folk who make others feel unwelcome, indeed, subjected to rudeness, directly, indirectly or otherwise ignored completely. I have been long fed up with this intimidation.I don't have to have a PhD to be interested and concerned about whats going on and nor should I need one in order to post.
I know the difference between joking around and serious,I can do both unlike some I could mention here. So i really think those who treat folk like that should get a grip!instead of being anti-social,start to share and teach others, after all no one person knows it all!

Couldn't agree with you more, BG. I've learned loads from these threads and I hope contributed in my own way ... albeit sometimes in a comical manner.
You need to make History interesting and exciting for people, especially kids ... otherwise they switch right off. I learned to fence so I could participate in a Mediaeval Tournament at school, and was lucky enough to be taught by the late Bert Bracewell, the former Scotland's National Team Coach, and good enough to be sent on to Hans Mater, one of the founders of the “Society of British Fight Directors” (SBFD). I learned all about using maces, various swords, shieldwork, targs, and horse-riding. All of this I used later in teaching local kids about History.
But there's still so much I want to learn.

Just as I thought, this thread has very little to do with scots heritage has it?
I am surprised you feel that way Babygael and still cant see it in the history section threads, I have been reading over some of them and still think it is far less intimidating and hostile than any other internet forum that I know.
When mistakes are made the arguments mostly centre around those who have good knoeledge and can spark good debates in my opinion.
When it is just simple mistakes it is usually handled easily by the posters themslves.
For instance in one recent thread that caused trouble, Dave Coull spotted a mistake that he hadnt noticed earlier in a post from mairead, he guessed it was a typo, admitted not noticing and therefore making the same mistake, pointing it out in a friendly manner. That was a good example of mistakes not being pounced on and handled by the posters themselves without moderation.
