Phil O'Donnell dies

Tragic news which puts the usual concerns of football fans into perspective.

My best pal was a youth player at a few clubs and met Phil and said he was a total gentleman, had time for photo's and a wee chat.

The Old Firm match has been called off. I know it's a sign of respect for the guy and think it was the right decision even if it hadn't been a former Celtic Player, kind of gutted though. Was looking forward to watching it before I head off back home to Wales.

Ha ha, no I'd not touched a drop I can assure you. Sober at the bells for the first time in decades.

The point was that all this vulgar mass-mourning for total strangers is a completely new phenomenon in public life. It first raised its ugly head during the stomach-churning months of weeping and wailing that followed the death of Diana Spencer.

It's not a matter of turning out for a funeral, but of weeping and wailing and pretending to be in the least bit upset about the deaths that really mean nothing to you at all. I don't like it one bit.

Bit unfair. Many fans especially those of Motherwell and Celtic would have been genuinly upset by this. Football fans are strange creatures who demand a lot from players and in return will support the players. A captain dropping dead on the pitch is sure to spark an emotional reaction.

Motherwell players and staff, yes. Dundee Utd players and staff too, as they were involved in the same game. People who were in the stadium personally, yes.

While it suits them yes. They'll quite happily give the same player dog's abuse if he happens to change job.

I do honetly think it would have had a impact on the wider football supporting people. I'm not a fan of Motherwell or Dundee, I can recall a player called Phil O'Donnell at Sheff Weds a few years ago but not a player I knew anything about. But, I was still shocked and saddened to hear of his death. It's something that is going to shock supporters of football, especially given the time of year it happened.

There is a general feeling of solidarity within fans football supporting groups. When my own club, Wrecsam where in administration football fans from other clubs where doing collections at their own games for the Wrexham Supporters Trust, also 'fans united' days where organised where fans from loads of others clubs from the EFL and the SFL came down to watch a Wrecsam match in the colours of their own team. It's not difficult to see then how this 'solidarity' can turn to emotion upon a player of another team dropping dead.

You're right that players are of course given dogs abuse of the highest order when they are perceived to have let the fans down in someway. This is because of the huge amount expected from those players. Of course there are many players who upon leaving are thanked and wished the best of luck - Robbie Fowler is one example from Liverpool fans. Despite having left Liverpool twice (not of his own choice) he's still regarded as a legend by fans and always will be.
