Plane Stupid Golf Tour 2009: Aberdeen Airport Occupation

Update of events at Aberdeen Airport on Tuesday 3rd March.

http://www.indymediascotland.org/node/14981

At 09.30am Plane Stupid Scotland's protest at Aberdeen airport has come to a close after six hours. The eleven people, including local residents that this morning breached the airport fence have now been arrested.

The protesters were told by police to dismantle their peaceful protest because the taxiway they were secured to was needed by an emergency helicopter. A baby apparently required urgent treatment, and any other approach would cause delays. Obviously the safety of the public was of paramount concern to the activists and so they duly removed themselves.

Plane Stupid has subsequently spoken to both the Accident and Emergency unit of Aberdeen hospital, and its press department. They were unaware of any transfers requested by air this morning. Not only that, but spokesperson Lesley Middleton said:

"We have our own helipad which we use in emergencies. Of course you can't anticipate what may happen, but in all my years of working here I can't think of a time when we've used Aberdeen airport. The only circumstances I can imagine where we'd need to get access to the area would be if there was an accident at the airport."

The protesters are now looking into the conduct of the police and are considering making a complaint.

Plane Stupid Scotland has, during the last week of National Planning Framework consultation, effectively shed light on the illogical expansion plans. At a time of economic recession and looming climate crisis Scotland has the opportunity to be at the forefront of a secure and sustainable future and to take a strong position to tackle climate change. They also linked the plans for airport expansion with the current development's of Donald Trump's Golf Course in Aberdeenshire.

Katie Morrison, from the group Plane Stupid Scotland said:

"It is unnecessary to expand Aberdeen airport as 58% of flights are domestic and could be replaced with high speed rail link. We ask that the government stop playing around with big business and start winning the race against runaway climate change. Trump's golf course and our governments planned expansion will concrete over Scottish democracy."

The activists were in high spirits as they removed themselves from the airport but general feeling was of annoyance at the underhanded tactics used by the police which lured the protesters in and took advantage of their caring nature.

The activists are currently being held in custody in Inverurie and are being charged with breach of the peace. It is likely that they will be appearing in court tomorrow morning, all support is welcome and will be greatly appreciated.

We will inform you of any updates as they happen. Good work Plane Stupid Scotland, time to celebrate another successful action.

We will still need planes in the future. We will still need airports.
If every aeroplane in Scotland stopped flying today and every airport shut for a week - it would make no difference, as buses, coaches, cars, ships and trains would take up the slack.
Local yokelism pretending to be international environmentalism.

Should be lobbying for planes that use a mixture of energy cells/fuel/solar.
Red Justice

I am pleased they have linked their campaign against the current development of Donald Trump's Golf Course.

The Golf course is just for Trump's rich friends to play on. Something the SNP and their friends didn't tell you when they supported Trump.
Scott2006

You might be right Red Justice that the Trump golf course will just be for his rich friends. Having rich friends isn't the most objectionable thing in the world. Having a few thousand more people in jobs, and some quality housing is the price you pay for having international business tycoons invest in your country.
Then again, anybody might be able to join the course if the mega-rich choose not to play on it. We wont know until its built.

Well done, Scott. Sensible words at last.

If every plane in the world was to stop flying for 10years it wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference to global warming.

Global warming is caused by, principally, an increase in solar energy.

Go and picket the sun, Plane Stupid.

And as for Trump - who cares? The area is a useless wilderness, fields with nothing on them.

I suppose the taxi drivers in Aberdeen will care, about hugely increased revenue in the future. But then since when did socialists care about the workers?

No its not.
jamesieboy

Increases in solar emissions are the biggest single cause of global warming.

Increases in methane, from cows and from releases from melting permafrost is a major contributor.

Human influences, unlike what that idiot who threw custard at Mandelson, said today are minimal.

Runways or no runways, it wouldn't make much difference.

And what about the depleting ozone layer and the increases in skin cancer? That seems to have died a death. The ozone layer seems to have been miraculously cured.

The worst single thing that is causing the human input to global warming is the cutting down of the Amazon rainforest.

This is untrue, it is a myth perpetuated by the TV programme "The Great Global Warming Swindle". This programme showed graphs where the planet's temperature matched solar output, the trouble is they only showed them up the 80s, the point at which there is no longer a correlation. This theory has been widely proved to be incorrect.

Although much more potent a greenhouse gas, methane has an atmospheric half life of only a year or two. CO2's is measured in centuries.

No, the increases in CO2 we see in the atmosphere are a result of burning fossil fuels. We can tell this precisely due to the isotope levels in the atmosphere. Another lie from that programme - they said volcanoes produce more CO2 than people. This isn't even slightly true, although it wouldn't actually matter if it did, as volcanoes onlt put back into the atmopshere CO2 that was previously dissoved in seawater and subducted into the crust. The problem is the CO2 that's been locked away for hundreds of millions of years has been released in the space of a century or two, and it shifting the planet's point of thermal equilibrium.

Probably not. We humans are very good at consuming resources, so we'll find a way to use up all the oil.

Ask the Australians if its died a death. They have a huge problem with UV levels. Let me guess, you're the sort of person who looks out the window, sees a bit of snow on your doorstep and uses it as evidence to dismiss global warming.

No, its the enormous quantity of CO2 that we've poured into the atmosphere since the start of the industrial revolution.

Oh? When was the high speed rail link built? How come I didn't hear about it before now?

Let me guess, they want us to stop flying now and then wait a few decades until a high speed rail link is built. Is that about it?

After 30 years as "the oil capital of Europe" Aberdeen doesn't even have decent road links to anywhere, let alone a high speed rail link. Aberdeen's infrastructure is a disgrace and luddites like Plane Stupid certainly don't help anything.

Have you seen the projected visitor numbers? I don't think Mr Trump is that popular.
jamesieboy

I went on a football trip to Fraserburgh a few months ago and I can't see what all the fuss is about.

Flat, featureless fields to the north of the city of Aberdeen. I inderstand the dunes are to stay mostly intact under his plans.

The Trossachs it aint. Loch Lomond is certainlt aint. Nor the Isle of Skye.

I take it back. Clearly your geographical understanding of what Aberdeen is can only have come from a truly amazing education  Wink
jamesieboy

Most of the CO2 comes from the coal-fired power stations in countries like India and China.

So I, along with anybody else who takes Ryanair and Easyjet flights to the continent should just ignore these pricks.

Go and picket the Chinese embassy. Boycott Primark.
jamesieboy

Personal insults again. Inverted snobbery.

I see you live in Perthshire. How do you compare the scenery to the north of Aberdeen with the Sma' Glen, for example? Or the area around Comrie?

I would say - there is no comparison.

Aberdeen is a working city, nothing else.

What has any of that goto to do with the science of climate change? These are political points.

Not snobbery, just taking the p**s.

Depends what you're comparing it to really. If you have a love of granite based architecture then Aberdeen wins hands down.
jamesieboy

Climate change is a political issue.

I never said it wasn't. However no single act by a politician or campaigner changes the science behind it, nor does the source of the emissions.
