Police to get access to Internet logs

The big brother police state will be with us on the Internet as a report makes clear from the UK computer magazine 'Computer Active.'

According to the CA publication, phone and Internet companies will soon be forced to keep logs of Internet usage and make them available to the police.

Changes to the Communications Data Bill announced by British Labour PM Gordon Brown in early May, would implement the remainder of the European Union's Data Retention Directive.

Last October the Government enacted the first part of the regulations, which said that telephone companies must keep records of calls to and from landlines and mobiles. This now includes records of Internet and email usage, and Internet telephone calls.

The Home Office claim the records are needed to monitor communications for countering terrorism and crime prevention and detection. Records of Internet activity will be kept by Internet Service Providers for six months.

Privacy experts fear the Government is being cagey about the full implications and future use of retained data from Internet users.

Wikipedia explains that in the case of government data retention, the data that is stored is usually of telephone calls made and received, emails sent and received and web sites visited. Location data is also collected. The primary objective in government data retention is traffic analysis and mass surveillance. By analysing the retained data governments can identify the locations of individuals, an individual's associates and the members of a group such as political opponents.
