Polish Missile CrisisAs of last night, it is now clear what the American incited Georgian diversion was for. They are to deploy missile bases in Poland.
The Russians cannot ignore this threat to them. Yes there are bases already agreed in the CR but those were (just) defendable in terms of the Iran nuclear threat (alleged).
Those who are familiar with the full story of the Cuban missile crisis will be aware that it was the Americans that started things by secretly building missile sites in Turkey (which borders Russia). The version told by the media to the public of the West was that Russia was faced down by America in the form of JFK and backed down, removed their sites. A victory for the West. The truth was that the Americans had already backed down in secret, and removed their missiles from Turkey.
Do not be amazed therefore if the next thing we hear is that the Russians have put missiles back on Cuba. They outmanoevered America last time with that en passant move and will no doubt try it again.
However this time there is a large American/British/French naval fleet assembled in the Atlantic for 'manoevers'. So this time they may have closed the stable door.
I had no sooner finished posting something similar to this in another forum when Angela Merkel and Dmitry Medvedev did a joint live press conference on tv. Rather than sticking to the Georgia agenda, Medvedev identified the Polish missile crisis was key, describing it as a sorry day for Europe and the World, and obvious to everyone what the real target was. Merkel looked stunned at Medvedev not sticking to the script and preposterously tried to claim the American missiles in Poland were to protect the West from Iran. I almost felt sorry for her.
The expected media clamp down, has, as far as I can tell, been instantaneous. There is no mention on Sky or BBC about Medvedev's comments on the Polish missiles. So I'm posting this here although I'm sure the internet will get the message out there.

Voice of Russia website is saying this:

Moscow says US-Poland missile treaty aimed against Russia
Moscow is worried over the signing of a deal between the US and Poland on plans to deploy a part of American missile defence system in Poland. A rush to sign the document proves that the project has nothing to do with the missile threat from Iran as affirmed by the US, on the contrary it is directed against Russia, said a senior Russian Foreign Ministry official in Moscow. Under the agreement, the US will install ten interceptor missiles in Poland and deploy an American contingent permanently by 2012.
According to opinion polls, overwhelming majority of Poles oppose American missile defence system. The residents of the Czech Republic, where the US plan to install a radar also oppose the move. The US has signed a relevant agreement with the Czech authorities. Russia says the deployment of a missile defence system near its border poses a threat to its national security.

"American incited"?
Oh, please. Stop sucking up to to the Russian tyrants who still feel they can bully their smaller neighbours for no good reason and start siding with countries such as Georgia and Poland who, unlike Russia, are democracies who just want closer ties to the EU, NATO and the US.
These Russians are the same people who murdered a British citizen in London and refuse to extradite the lead suspect.

Blackleaf told Chicmac "Stop sucking up to to the Russian tyrants".
I think it is ridiculous to accuse Chicmac of sucking up to the Russians, but he can answer that for himself. As for me, back in the 70s, together with Terry Liddle and Gary Holden, I formed the campaign for a boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Terry was arrested at Moscow airport with a rucksack full of our subversive leaflets, and put on the next plane back by the Russian authorities. You are making the moronic mistake of assuming that anybody who doesn't suck up to Washington DC, like you do, must be pro-Moscow.
"start siding with countries such as Georgia and Poland who, unlike Russia, are democracies"
What a load of crap!
True, Russian "democracy" leaves much to be desired. So does Georgian democracy. So does Polish democracy. So does American democracy. True, the Georgian dictator probably did come to power with the support of a majority of Georgians (although certainly NOT of the South Ossetians, or the Abkhazians) but he blotted his "democratic" credentials last year with a suppression of opposition parties, groups, and individuals.
Georgia attacked the South Ossetians, who had been effectively independent for SIXTEEN YEARS, committing many atrocities in the process. The Ossetians appealed to the Russians for help. The Russians responded to this appeal for help. Yes, sure, they had mixed motives for doing so, it wasn't entirely humanitarian. Nevertheless, presenting this as simply democratic Georgia against Russian invaders is a downright lie. It was the Georgians who invaded Ossetia. Since the people of NORTH Ossetia are Russian citizens, and would have got involed anyway whatever the government in Moscow had decided, there was simply no way Russia could avoid being involved.
The Georgian dictator is a nutcase, and the reaction of the West is to seek to re-start the Cold War, but this time against a Russia which is capitalist and relatively democratic. Well, at least as democratic as Georgia, or Poland, anyway. That is just downright stupid. And you, Blackleaf, are downright stupid for swallowing their crap.
