Population rises for third year | Quote: | Population rises for third year
Scotland's population has risen for the third consecutive year to just over five million, statistics show.
Registrar General Duncan Macniven said the main reason for the increase was that 19,000 more people migrated to Scotland than moved away.
The 2005 Mid-Year Population Estimates report found an increase in births and fewer deaths.
The report showed a population increase of 16,400 to 5,094,800 from 2004 until 2005.
Compared with the previous year there were almost 700 more births and more than 1,000 fewer deaths but deaths exceeded the number of births by 2,300.
Over the year there was a net gain from migration of about 19,000, including a net gain of 12,500 people from the rest of the UK and a net gain of 7,300 people from overseas.
The report showed 57,300 people came to Scotland from England, Wales and Northern Ireland and 44,800 left Scotland to go to those parts of the UK.
About 35,400 people (including asylum seekers) came to Scotland from overseas and about 28,100 people left to go overseas.
Mr Macniven said: "The main reason why Scotland's population has increased for three years in a row is because around 19,000 more people migrated to Scotland than moved away.
"This is the second highest figure for Scotland to date, 7,000 below last year's record figure of 26,000.
"Although deaths still exceed births, it is encouraging that the number of births has continued to increase and that the number of deaths has fallen slightly." |

I'm not really surprised if I'm honest. We hear all about this population decline and how we're all doomed, but the reality is Scotland's population has declined most years since 1974, and declined faster since 2001 as the General Register Office admitted that they had "over-estimated" Scotland's population by 50,000 every year through the 80's and 90's.

Well if Scotland's population is growing then it's good for Scotland.

5 million. My God, you are getting big.

hActually, it just means that we are at the same level as the 1951 census. Zero population growth in more than half a century is quite worrying.

Between mid-1993 and mid-2003, England’s population grew by 3.6 per cent and the population of Wales grew by 1.9 per cent over the decade. In contrast, Scotland’s population DECREASED by 0.7 per cent.

England's population wil probably hit the 60 million mark around 2030-2040.
And, according to the website, Scotland's population is projected to decrease still, whereas NI and Wales will hit their peaks around 2030 and England around 2040 -
| Quote: | Projected trends differ for the four countries of the UK. The decline in the population of Scotland is projected to continue, while the populations of Wales and Northern Ireland are projected to peak around 2030 and then start to fall. The population of England is still projected to be rising in forty years' time, but at a low rate of growth.
Scotland is the least densely populated of the four countries of the UK. There were 65 people resident per square kilometre in Scotland in 2003. In comparison the population density was 125 people per square kilometre in Northern Ireland, 142 people in Wales and 383 people in England. London had a far higher population density than any of the English regions, with 4,700 people living in each square kilometre on average |

All things being well, I will have done my bit to add to the Scottish population this year

Well you cannot expect to sustain a growing population indefinitely. It's a rather irresponsible thing to be doing considering the present global situation.
Instead we need to think of better ways to care for our elderly.

I think that is one of the areas where the Scottish Parliament has made a real difference. For instance free personal care and free bus travel can only enhance the well being of the elderly.
Hopefully by the time I retire, there will be a bill passed for free beer

But lots of free stuff for the elderly means more economically active people are required to pay for it. I took Av's post to mean we need to find more efficient ways to care for our elderly so that we are not so desperate for people of working age to pay for it.

Indeed, that is what I meant. Unfortunately I don't have any bright ideas.
The free bus pass thing is a scandal. My parents have one - it's never used since they have two cars and probably haven't used public transport since that oft-told story about my father nearly falling out of the back of a London bus in the 70s. Meanwhile I'm sure students and those on lower incomes might actually use it. At any rate, it should be means-tested.
From what I understand, the state effective pays for the buses to run during the day (ie, after 9.30am and before 4.30pm) through the bus pass scheme.

Means testing is an expensive waste of resources. I believe more is spent on the bureaucracy involved in testing the means and judging the entitlement of claimants than any such scheme would cost if the benefit was freely available to all.

I agree. I'm surprised at someone who advocates a 'flat tax' rate encouraging even more means testing.

You may well have a point there - one that I'd not really considered. Personally I'd do away with them altogether, but then again I realise my views are a little too extreme for the dull socialism of Scotland.
