A pretty good assessment too. MacWhirter is almost there, but does give a good impression of "ah'm still feart" with his last part of the article. You get the impression, one more Unionist c**k-up and he might just completely abandon their ideology.

My impression has always been that he is an SNP supporter but he camouflages it a bit to try to appear impartial. The next step for the SNP is to become the equivalent of CiU in Catalonia i.e. the natural party of government at Holyrood. By building up the Scottish state so people naturally look to Edinburgh for solutions a situation will develop where the prospect of suddenly going all the way will no longer scare people into supporting Labour for pragmatic reasons. I can't see independence happening rapidly unless there is a Czech-Slovak velvet divorce style push factor provided by Westminster.
