Salmond to oppose ID cards for ScotlandDon't think there is much that he can do about it though and Salmond will know this.
However, by voicing his opposition he is continuing to show that he is looking out for the interests of Scotland.

I think where any Scottish government stands up to Westminster is a good thing. However it is true ID cards are being brought in by stealth and the British Labour government clearly intend to eventually make them compulsory. They will push a vote through the House of Commons to make them compulsory probably after the next election (if they win) so the more people that voice opposition now the better. I am determinded I am not going to register and see the vunerabilities of a UK National Identity Register and that computer hackers would breach this.

There is a very good report on ID cards which was originally commissioned by the UK Treasury when Gordon Brown was Chancellor of the Exchequer. It can be read online at http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/media/6/7/identity_assurance060308.pdf
Even if you don't read the full report, it is worth reading the ten basic principles listed on pages 11 and 12 of the pdf document. The UK Government's plan breaches all ten of the principles.
