Scotland wants Berwick for the oilHere's a letter in yesterday's Daily Mail:
Scottish theft by stealth
Greedy: Scotland wants to annex the Northumbrian town of Berwick to increase its economic zone in the North Sea
The Government wants to use a statutory instrument to abolish Berwick-on-Tweed Borough Council and bring the area under the control of Alnwick, 20 miles to the south.
Scottish MSPs are proposing to raise a similar simple statutory instrument in Holyrood to enable Berwick and an area 20 miles south toward Alnwick to be annexed by Scotland. This would dramatically extend Scotland's economic zone in the North Sea, diminishing England's share of resources such as oil.
Some years ago, Monmouthshire was quietly ceded to Wales from England in a similar process. We should be aware that the same ruse is being attempted.
Dennis Littler, Winterton, Lincolnshire
**********************************************
This is a despicable, greedy and imperialist thing for Scotland to do. Annex an English town and 20 miles of Northumberland just to get access to more oil in the North Sea.

Nah. Spoon fed DM readers think that we've annexed the whole of England already. After all, why does England have a Scottish PM and a Scottish Chancellor - and Scots MPs decide English policy.....
But to think that Holyrood can raise a SI and, hey presto, Berwick becomes Scottish - do they ever put their tiny brains in gear ?

Yet another lesson in incorrect history be Englands answer to Comical Ali or Goebbels.
Everytime I see this guy's posts I can't help but think of the famous line by Jack Nicholson:
"Truth, you can't handle the truth".
Monmouth was given BACK to Wales Blackleaf, most of Monmouth regard themselves as Wales. The English Democrat Party tried and FAILED to raise any issues regarding the nature of Monmouth. The people of Monmouth told you loud and clearly that there regard themselves as a part of WALES!
And regarding Berwick, it's up to the people of Berwick where they regard themselves, seems you're not one for allowing facts get in the way of a stupid story are you? Clown

Well not really. I doubt it'd be looked too kindly upon if, say, North Queensferry decided it wanted to become part of Queensland.

Of course it is. If the people of Berwick currently in England, but a place what's swapped and changed sides through out history, a place who's football team is in the Scottish football league etc wants to be Scottish then that is what should determine where it should be. It's not rocket science.

It always entertains me how nationalists seem to think football is somehow relevant to political discourse.

If you listen to certain football chants, you will see that certain Unionists also think it is relevant to political discourse.
Of course it's relevant. Either you're a snob or an ignoramus.

a) There is no historical precedent here.
b) You would have to prove this demand.

Well, small things do please small minds. Obviously though, those with a bigger mind will have spotted that my football reference was merely an example of the link that already exists between Berwick and Scotland.
The fact that Berwickshire is in Scotland is another obvious one.

I hate to break it to both Blackleaf and the letter writer, but, if the Scottish Border was extended to Berwick, or even as far as Bournemouth, it would make negligable difference to oil fields in Scottish waters, which are already considerably much further north than the latitude upon which Berwick stands.
And after all it was the ITV Tonight programme that started all this nonsense that's lead to a vote in favour of joining Scotland, not anyone else.

What programme?

The ITV Tonight Programme - Tonight with Trevor MacDonald, or whatever it is called:

As Economist said, the amount of oil in the "disputed zone" as it were is negligible. That's why I don't get exercised when people go on about the international line between England and Scotland. Scotland can afford to concede a line of equidistance and lose very little in return for some other, more valuable, concession during the negotiations.

The whole thing's a bit of a non-issue unless you actually live in Berwick or the area to the South. It's a reminder to staunch patriots/flag-waving nutters (like me) that most people care more about healthcare and education than more abstract politics.
It's an odd claim for the Lib-Dem chap to make, so I can only imagine they have selfish motive, probably electoral.

I read on the English National Party's site that we were "Land Grabbing".
My view on the Berwick issue is that it is funny how patriotic people become when it involves money. I remember a past vote on this where 49% of Bewrick considered themselves Scots. Of course back then we didn't have free health care for the elderly and numerous advantages, including a competent government.

Hamland - terrific idea! I wonder if anyone's going to let me set up my own Home Nation in the UK. Must try it some day.

Did they have free healthcare in England, when they annexed it?

No, but England had the Duke of Gloucester, who had a lot of men in the 1400s.
