Scotland worst for violence in developed nations - UN

From the BBC Scotland website - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/4257966.stm

Scotland has been named the most violent country in the developed world by a United Nations report.
The study found that, excluding murder, Scots were almost three times as likely to be assaulted as Americans.

Victims of crime in 21 countries were interviewed by the UN, but senior Scots police officers criticised the study.

The survey concluded that 2,000 Scots were attacked every week. That figure is 10 times the number recorded in official police figures.

The results showed Scotland was more violent than either England or Wales.

The figure for Scotland dwarves that of other developed nations such as Japan, where people are 30 times less likely to be attacked.

A statement from the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland said: "The general picture of Scotland around the world is not one of a violent country."
Peat

I found that report laughable, really.

Aparently the statistics that they gave for violence are 10 times higher than the official police figures!

I'm 42, lived in Scotland all my life, and Glasgow all my adult life. I've never been the victim of violence, nor have any of my family members.

Whilst there are certain housing estates that I wouldn't wander around on my own at night, I've never felt threatened in any public area e.g. the City Centre.

No I'll be honest neither have I.

The police are questioning where the UN got their figures from.

Apparently it was from some phone poll!! Confused
Alistair

Certainly I have seen assualts & violent crime - almost all drink or drug related. Quite how that compares with other countries I dont know!

I do know that a friend of mine from Glasgow - who lived in Cairo for a few years - said she felt much safer walking around Cairo at night than her own home city - largely again down to less drinking in Cairo!
SLG

The only place I've lived in outside Scotland is London. I can't say I ever felt too safe walking about at night anywhere in London.

But as Peat said, these are just shoddy statistics. Something like 1000 people were interviewed. Why the UN is carrying out a report in such a way, I really don't know. As for the media here, it is just lazy reporting to make so much of it.
azzuri

but on the other hand it would be stupid to suggest that we don't have a problem with violence on our streets.

I don't believe the figures quoted but we do have a problem due to the drinking and ned culture on our streets.
