Sectarianism at work: Accounts of
employment discrimination against
Irish Catholics in Scotland
Patricia Walls and Rory Williams
Abstract
This article examines accounts of discrimination in employment against
Irish Catholics in Glasgow from both majority and minority ethnic and
religious perspectives. It reveals evidence of continuing experience of sectarian
discrimination in work. Of particular note is the existence of discriminatory
practice affecting Catholic (Irish-descended) attempts to move up
the social scale. This evidence disputes the thoroughness of analyses which
ignore discrimination experience as relevant to the current social-class position
of Glasgow’s Irish Catholic community. The analysis presented here
also questions the practice of excluding ‘white’ ethnic groups from most
studies of ethnicity in Britain and considers whether sectarianism or racism
might most aptly describe experiences marked out by religious belonging
but clearly denoting ethnic origin. As part of a wider study of prolonged and
continuing health disadvantage among the Irish in Britain, it is suggested
that discrimination is one component in any explanation of the health of the
Irish or Irish Catholic minority, whose minority experience is usually overlooked
by researchers of ethnicity.
Keywords:
Catholic; Irish; discrimination; racism; sectarianism; whiteness.

I didn't even bother reading any of this because it's unfathomable due to the layout.
Is this a recent publication about Irish catholics in Scotland now or in the past?

One could ask the same sort of question regarding your lack of fondness for Scotland and Scots.

Outrageous Highlander.
I request that you withdraw that remark. This forum is Our Scotland meaning belonging to the people of Scotland whether they are Irish, Italian Pakistani or anything else. I didnt read the report but it was clear it was an issue relating to Irish Catholics IN Scotland.

Where would Highlander go and live then? Nova Scotia?
Anyway, what's up Parkhead? No one offering you a job or something?

I wouldn't say that the comment was racist, merely idiotic and ignorant.
We should be used to Highlander showing complete ignorance by now though...

I disagree. if such a comment were made to a person of pakistani descent who was interested in the politics and history of that country then that remark would almost definitely be deemed racist.

gParkhead, I am a moderator and have asked him to withdraw the remark. Azzurri will deal with this depending on his reply.
We will not stand for this sort of remark and Our Scotland welcomes all. My old neighbour used to hark on about his familys roots in Lucca, I never once suggested that he should go to Italy. Too often we allow people to make these remarks to Irish catholics in Scotland.
Your post was too long to read in that format for me but it was clearly about possible bias against Irish catholics in the Scottish job market and as such a call for you to leave the country is similar to what the BNP would say to an asian in England.

I agree totally with that sentiment. it was from a pdf document so if anyone knows a better way of copying and pasting they can let me know. I couldnt just post a link as to view it requires paid access, i did it through my university.

If that's the case it might not be a great idea to post the article in full due to copyright law.
Could you remove it and basically just touch on the conclusions of the report and reference it?

Its gone.
However, someone recently told me that people they knew were fond of a certain country and the people and had gone to live there.
