Song Query - Holyrood openingAt the most recent (I think) opening of the Holyrood Parliament, a woman singer sang a version of (I think) "Auld Lang Syne". Correct me if I'm wrong about this. She certainly sang a tune I'd never heard before, and I can't find out anything about it. Comments??

The word "bizarre" springs most nimbly to mind.
Come up with something better and send it to the new First Minister, Makar. Just don't get all sad and misty like Eilean t'Cho or we'll all be throwing up! Something forward looking and melodic would be nice. No screeching of the odious bagpipes, thank you.
Now get to work!

I think it was "A man's a man for a' that!" by Robert Burns that was sang. Can't remember the name of the woman who sang it though...

No, Azzuri, I think that was at the very first opening. But I can't remember too clearly - I know I have seen a video of the event and there she is, evidently a popular Scots lassie these days (I as an exile am not up to date on mod stuff) singing to the accompaniment of a prestigious orchestra. Then the Assembly joins in, singing (NB) the expected tune. Can someone point me at the video?
Aye, Blackadder, bizarre it was, and awfully irritating too. As for making up my own, maybe to justify my nom de guerre, I think I'll wait will the dust settles over there.
Babygael, your "revival" of "Goodbyee" is an idea, but it would need to be clear who(m) it's aimed at. How is the battle ggoing, anyway? Here in Canada (far west coast) it's only 7 AM, a fine sunny day. I hope you've got good weather over there for der Tag.

I didn't know we had songs at every opening, but i like the idea !
I do remember that it was Jean Redpath who sang "A Man's a Man" at the inaugural ceremony.

No, it was Sheena Wellington (corrected).
And yes, Eddie Reader sang the other song.

Eddi Reader sang "wild mountain side" a song written by her partner John Douglas (trash can sinatras), at the inuaguaral opening.

Pogofish:
Thanks for the clicky - the Eddi Reader version of Auld Lang Syne is what I was asking about. She sings a verse or two before the tune changes and everyone is asked to join in. - To the familiar tune, that is - i.e. the "new" tune aka The Miller's Daughter. There is an older tune, in the Scots Musical Museum e.g., but it isn't the one she sings. Question is, what IS the one she sings? Did she have the gall to make up a new one? I've tried and tried but cannot connect what she sings with the old tune [to which Burns wrote his words]. Can you knowledgeable types enlighten me?
Cheers
- Since she's accompanied throughout by the orchestra, they must have known what they were doing. Perhaps I can ask them?
