Sri Lanka massacres - does anybody care?Shocking and harrowing pictures from Al Jazeera:
With tens of thousands killed already and many others injured, including non-combatants such as women and children, the casualties are far worse than in Gaza a few months ago.
Does anybody really care? It doesn't seem like it.
Too many politicos out there are guilty of selective outrage. Theythrow up their hands in horror at one barbarity but ignore others with far worse levels of casualties. Why?
Remember all the protests about South Africa and apartheid. But absolutely nothing about the brutal regimes like Mobuto's who was butchering hundreds of thousands in massacres throughout Zaire.
Consistency. That is all we ask.

We? Is that a royal we, or are you posting on behalf of a group?

The media have given this reasonable coverage. As usual, like most of the ignored campaigns, it is left to a few individuals and small groups in the trade unions and left parties to protest re this.
But people are selective, as jamesie says, mainly for good reason. usually because they dont know about it due to lack of media coverage, or they have to focus on a few campaigns lest they cant cerry out anything effectively.
I find it useful to concentrate on one local, one national, one UK and one international issue at a time, that about all I have time for. Add that to general party work, community work, home life, and real paid work and most people couldnt do much more than that.
Mobuto was a big focus for the left as he was so heavily involved with western capital and his involvement in funding armed groups in other countries. The mainstream media largely ignored his crimes.

We means my mates and my wife and some of my work colleagues and I'm sure plenty of other folk around the country. They are asking the question - why?
Rinty made a good answer, now it's your turn, Holebender.

Thats partly the problem, rather than moaning about others not doing anything or not publicising it, you should join up and get involved with those who do.
