Sturgeon to unveil £100m student plans
A pledge to make student debt a major issue at next year's Holyrood election will be made this week by the SNP.
Deputy leader Nicola Sturgeon will announce plans for a £100m funding package.
She will make the promise of a return to free university education by scrapping the graduate endowment, saying that it is often seen by students as simply deferred tuition fees.
The SNP will couple that with reintroducing a student grants system so graduates will not start their working lives heavily burdened by debt.
Ms Sturgeon said: "This package will get rid of the graduate endowment, the back-door tuition fee, to make university education free again.
"It will also abolish student loans and replace them with grants and it will allow for the write-off of the existing graduate debt from student loans that holds so many young people back from taking entrepreneurial risks and getting on the housing ladder.
"The SNP is determined to create a generation that is independent of mind, confident and forward-looking."

I am maybe being a bit slow (very likely) but all that - scrapping graduate endowment, reintroducing grants and providing free university education AND write off existing debt is gonna cost a bit more than £100m, surely?

How long is that figure of £100m for exactly? is most of that just for the last few years of debt, how far into the future does it go. That equates to 6250 students at ave debt of £16k. Is it only Scottish uni's that will qualify or will someone be able to get the same grant for a uni in england or wales? will english or welsh srudents qualify if they go to a Scottish uni? It seems to me that it's just a headline piece designed to brighten up a dull news day or to drum up a bit of publicity for something else. . . . i hope i'm wrong i really do but i think i'll remain somewhat sceptical about it until it's in place and actually happening.

SF, Sturgeon will be announcing the details of this later in the week. So remain sceptical, but don't criticise too much until we get the detail.

to be honest i wouldnt mind paying a slighly higher rate of tax if i went to unniversity. what i do mind though is the fact that even if i didnt finish my degree i would still have been thousands in debt. at present i am forced to taking voluntary work for experience and still have a massive debt hanging over me (including an extra 2000 just for the cheek to obtain a degree) despite not enjoying these fantasy great earnings.
