Taking a cat-nap...560ft up!

Taking a cat-nap...560ft up!
23rd March 2006

High living: For one man the girder is a lunch table, for the other it is somewhere to doze off.

When you're working more than 500ft up and it is time for a break, your options are rather limited.

There's no popping out to the shops or the pub, and not even the chance of a discreet nap somewhere.

So this worker made do with a steel girder and the open skies - yawning, stretching and then tucking an arm under his head for a pillow. There he dozed for half an hour, a dizzying 560ft above Manchester.

His companion seemed equally unfazed by the drop and the winds, eating his lunch and placing a great deal of trust in his rope harness.

Perhaps they had been watching the classic silent era films of comedian Harold Lloyd - and some of his daredevil stunts on skyscrapers.

The two men were working on the Beetham Tower, which will be Britain's tallest building outside London and will provide some of the highest living space in Britain.

An onlooker said: 'The guy just lay down and had a kip. He was completely still for 25 minutes, then he sat up and started texting someone on his phone - he must have had a good signal up there.'

How the tower, in Manchester, will look.

I've heard of some tribe of American Indians who do that kind of work over there - i don't think they would have bothered with the harnesses !

I dread to think what they do when they need to go to the toilet Embarassed
