The Description is WRONG

Who decides on these bits under the "Author" name on this Our Scotland forum? They just appear there, they are not chosen by the authors themselves. Some of them say things like "Findin ma way" or "This is ma life" or "Gaining a reputation". That's fair enough, but what it says under MY name is just plain wrong. It has just one word : "Nationalist". I'll be sixty six next month and I have never in my entire life described myself as a Nationalist. I used to describe myself as an Anarchist, but stopped using that self-description quite a few years ago now, because an anarchist is somebody who is against all government, and I can't be one if I'm campaigning for an independent Scottish government. But no way have I ever been a Nationalist. A supporter of independence, yes, but that's not the same thing. I don't mind if I get described as "wise guy", or "smart alec", or "argumentative old so-and-so", or "troublemaker", or even just plain "trouble", there would at least be some justification for any one of these descriptions, and probably some of the folk on here can think of quite a few more descriptions which they would like to apply to me but which should not be printed on a site accessible to youngsters. But please - NOT "Nationalist"!
Lothian Sky

I dont view myself as "a nationalist", simply because I'm no more one than any "normal" citizen of an independent country. I'm a normalist!
When we're finally independent, I'll be able to concentrate on making independence work.

But nationalism is not a dirty word, and its virtually impossible to define.
You're getting your sporran in a twist about nothing.
Dave Coull

Lothian Sky wrote "nationalism is not a dirty word" - yes I know, there are different kinds of nationalism, and some of my best friends are nationalists. "and its virtually impossible to define. You're getting your sporran in a twist about nothing." - No I'm not. You might as well say that Scots who don't like folk from other countries referring to them as "British", or, worse still, "English", are getting their sporrans in a twist over nothing. It's a matter of self-determination. There are some folk, such as yourself, who do not describe themselves as nationalists but who nevertheless raise no objection to the description. That's up to you. But I say that the "Nationalist" description which has been applied to me is wrong. Therefore, as a matter of self-determination, my personal objection to this description for ME should be recognised.
Cymro

I've been called a lot worse things than a Nationalist!
Dave Coull

Cymro wrote "I've been called a lot worse things than a Nationalist!" - so have I. But that is beside the point. I have already said that I don't mind if folk call me a "trouble-maker" or a "cantankerous old git" or whatever, after all, while perhaps not the whole truth, there could nevertheless be a certain amount of truth in such descriptions. But what puzzles me is, why have I been singled out for the description "Nationalist", while others who really ARE nationalists, and who don't care if the whole world knows it, have not??????!!!!!!!!!
SLG

I think the person who set up the site just came up with a list of different titles for different post counts for a bit of fun. Everyone with your number of posts would have the title 'nationalist'.

I guess that the original thought would have been that if you had hung about here long enough to make >150 posts, then you were probably, by some description, a Scottish nationalist. It's nothing personal Dave.

If anyone else has a problem with their present title, please let me know and we can change it.
Dave Coull

I see the description under my name has now changed! I suppose an independentista might be a Spanish-speaking supporter of independencia. Well, I can garble a few sentences of Spanish, so that will do! (By the way, if we become a republic, does that mean we will be growing bananas?)

Glad to hear it Dave. We aim to please Wink

I hope so, I feel so guilty about growing size of my carbon footprint after buying bananas imported from many hundreds of miles away.

Doesn't sound at all nice.
Sounds like a self-employed dentist tae me.

Wait a minute, shouldn't that be "independentisto"?
Or is this one of them Spanish words which can be either male or female?
macnumpty

Not the '-ista's. They're always '-ista' whether masculine or feminine.

And incidentally, 'rosa' and 'naranja' always end in 'a' too, even if they're governed by a masculine noun.

Guess who used to be a lingüista? Very Happy
