Some think that we are in the begginings of mass extinction trigger by human activity. If this is so,we may not be around to 'split' into two sub-species as we will extinct ourselve,or have to evlove into some new species to adapt to our changing surrounding.

Rising sea levels due to polar ice caps melting due to Global Waming, for example.

Or the potential demographic crisis due to over-population of humans (1BN humans 100 years ago is now 6BN today) as another example.

How about the big mahoosive comet thats coming to splat us all.

Microbes are the domiant species. They always have been and always will.

Diverngace of species is natural, no reason why we - so long as we hang around - won't do the same.
