The Herald and misleading headlines

Over the last couple few weeks I have noticed that the Herald have been printing articles that are no more than Labour propoganda masquerading as news.

For example take the headline below:

SNP takes a pounding over plans for control of currency

The three main points of the labour attack were highlighted in the article.

Quote:

Labour claimed the proposal to stick with sterling was a new one, though it was published without fanfare last year. Nationalists, however, dismissed the Chancellor's attack yesterday as "nonsense".

Quote:
Labour claims it is impossible for a country to join the euro without first having its own currency, while the SNP counters that Luxembourg did precisely that, having been in monetary union with Belgium.

Quote:
The Chancellor argued that a separate Scottish government would need London's permission to use sterling.

But independent countries elsewhere can adopt other countries' currencies, such as the euro or US dollar, for circulation and as a unit of account, as well as keeping them in government reserves.

It could prove difficult for London to stop sterling circulating in Scotland

Now the thing is that the Herald themselves have countered Labours allegations and shown them to be false, so why the headline.

This come just one day after a similar headline:
UK public pay growth slows as Scottish labour market thrives

When in fact the Scottish jobless total had risen by 12000 in two months.

It just makes you despair of the press in our wee country!!
Economist

I'm not surprised, but it could maybe be that they are just being controversial because the SNP are leading the polls at the moment, and they think it might be fun to "stir it up a bit". I don't know. I've noticed their editorial columns have been pretty hostile to independence lately, whereas, recently the Scotsman has been a bit more measured. And yet last year when this whole independence/SNP thing emerged into the political arena, I thought of the two, The Herald was the most neutral and least biased on the issue of independence (and the SNP). Perhaps the fad hasn't passed quick enough for them and they are now reverting to culture of complacency that infests Labour's Stalinist Scotland.

I fully expect come May 3rd the Daily Retread or other tabloid to go with the headline "If Salmond wins today, could the last person to leave Scotland please turn out the lights" like the Sun did to Kinnock in 1992. Shocked

I noticed this article as well. The article itself is OK but as you say George the headline could've been writtn by Millbank house.
Reluctant Hero

Do newspaper owners or newspaper editors determine the stance their newspapers take? Because the Sunday Herald is a lot more balanced than its sister paper.
