The ongoing political attack on anything Scottish

Even the poor Haggis has come under attack.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8180791.stm

This was immediately torn to pieces on soc culture scottish as an example of gross incompetence by the said historian.

Dates which mention Haggis are known and readily findable centuries before this book although several are English.

For example, Dunbar (who should be reasonably well known by any British historian) c 1500-1510

"Thy fowll front had, and he that Bartilmo flaid;
The gallowis gaipis eftir thy graceles gruntill,
As thow wald for ane haggeis, hungry gled."

Note that I accord little or no  cultural significance to Haggis myself.

Cullinary and sartorial icons to me act as not much more than cultural badges and change with almost as much regularity as fashion

It hardly seems worth the effort really, it's been associatted with scotland for so long as to claim it's anything other than a Scottish dish is rather, well dull.

I believe there is a propaganda war being fought at the moment in the media.
Recently the Scotsman and the Times have gone into over-drive in their attacks on the SNP government and individual Ministers (at the moment Salmond is getting the personal attacks).

It's unionist v Nationalist in the media propaganda war, the unionists have more outlets for their attacks but so far have failed to damage the SNP. I suppose the internet is one place a Nationalist voice can be heard, but that's democracy, british style.

If there is a propaganda war then this is either nothing to do with it or will have little effect.  It is not whether something originates from a country that makes it part of a places history or culture.

Ireland had never seen a potato until a few hundred years ago, likewise the english and cups of tea!

The other one is Whisky of course.

I have had a few drunken debates at the bar with Irishmen who claim the origin of whisky. Not really surprising considering that the original Scots came from Ireland in the first place, so must have brought the knowledge with them.

Scots as ever, have shown good marketing ingenuity in making the best of it and perfecting the taste of it!

The English too claim the invention of the modern kilt. I think that is a fairly well known story which I can't be bothered to repeat.

I still find it odd seeing Welsh and Cornish men wearing kilts but hey ho, they're 'celts' so live and let live.

Cybernats and the like seem unable to understand that when you are in government, people criticise you. The SNP are getting a far easier ride than Labour are getting in government, despite the former being perhaps even more useless.

Yes, 'celts' in inverted commas. I had understood the Norse originally introduced the kilt to the western Isles. I read somewhere else Whisky was probably invented in China. Odd then that they don't seem to produce it and flog it to us dirt cheap like they do everything else.

You read it somewhere? I read somewhere that a London Routemaster bus had been found on the moon. Should I believe it?

Goodness me. I don't see you referencing all your assertions Mr Holebender. In the spirit of light discussion I don't think it's entirely crucial. Do you not believe anything you read then? I will wager it wouldn't give you much to talk about. Judging by your unconstructive jibes most of the time, you clearly haven't. You might like to get your own house in order...

Well of course you would find them useless.  Surprised... no.

Define useless (or is it just more words from you)

and

define the brilliance of the Tories that haver so enamoured them to the Scots with the rise and fall of Thatcher.

The SNP have done all they can to improve the lot of the Scots while in government and as far as I'm aware the Scots think so too (unless you have polling data to prove otherwise).

It wasn't the Moon.  It was the North Pole and fine you know it!   Laughing
