The sacking of Aberdeen

13th October 1644.

The Sacking of Aberdeen.

After defeating the Covenanting army on the outskirts of the town, the Highlanders and the Irish troops in Montrose's force, drunk with victory, broke into the city and sacked the place, killing more than a hundred innocent men and women.
What part the Great Montose played in this has been widely disputed.
It is almost inconceivable that he would have ordered such a thing but he made no attempt to stop it either.
It is thought that the murder of his drummer boy by the Covenanters, an event in which the people of Aberdeen had no part, may have triggered this off. At any rate, the sacking of Aberdeen was the cause of the only blemish on the fair name of James Graham, Marquess of Montrose
