Tories to raise top rate of income tax

This is not going to please traditional Tory voters, but they are going to increase the top rate of income tax by 5p to 45p if they get elected.

Well, we have got to start somewhere in paying back all the money that we have borrowed.

Re: Tories to raise top rate of income tax

There's an inevitability about it, tax on everything and for everyone will be going up, whether it's an extra 5p on the upper IT rate, VAT hitting 20%, or a plethora of pseudo 'green taxes' we're all going to be hammered.

Not all of us have been living a debt fuelled lifestyle!!

I'm fed up with politicians and pundits telling us we're ALL responsible for the current mess.  I'm not!  Maybe if I had, I could have a better and more comfortable existence than I do!

Only the Tories and their pals will benefit in the decade after 2010 unless we get out of the Westminster Triangle (with apologies to the Bermuda Triangle except our money has disappeared and not ships).
Will the EU in the next few years set across the EU the level of Sales Tax/VAT harmonisation..? Nothing much would surprise me - as politicians look for faceless banks and institutions to blame for policy changes forced upon them.

The Bullingdon Club will probably get a tax break and recast itself as a political think-tank!

If, like myself & Lady Pitsligo, you haven't gone down the road of running up loads of debts, then you could be laughing. In about 3-4 years when I'm predicting house prices are as low as they'll get, I'll be ready with a nice fat deposit to buy a good sized house with land for what wouldn't get you a 2 bed room semi today. We're sitting tight, saving like crazy and biding our time.

it wouldn't surprise me if this financial crisis causes the eu to implode as member nations take a more protectionist stance despite big words about working through it together.

Just look at what Westminster is doing to prrotect the financial sector, while the french strike deals with car manufacturers to keep production at home.  No rationalperson can blame governments for seeking to protect the country they serve and the people who elected them.

We bought our first house in 2000 and based what we could afford on interest rates of 13%, fortunately things never went that way, but there've been a lot of changes since then, with increased out-goings, loss of an income, and the purchase of a house in need of severe renovations ... we've had to consider whether or not to spend the monies set aside to make our new house homely or too hang on to it to cushion any unexpected blows.

I meant the country as a whole.

Think you could be right about the EU, especially when you read items like this:

Quote:
Citing a recent poll for Prospect magazine, in which 37 per cent predicted serious social unrest in British cities, the report identified the use of immigrant labour at a time of soaring unemployment as a possible flashpoint for unrest in Britain.

It said: "The mood of the country is also revealed by the results of a recent FT/Harris survey that showed that almost 80 per cent of British adults believe that immigrants should be asked to leave the country if they do not have a job."

It'll be interesting to see how the Tory Party react to this over the next few months/years as they seem to be the party that tear themselves apart over Europe more than any others.

Looks like the Tories tax increase is dead in the water before it even begins as top Tories have come out against it.  But as Alasdair says, there are going to have to be tax increases somewhere.  The trick for whoever is in government will be to raise the most money while annoying the least amount of people.
