Two referendums in 2010?

Interesting piece in The Spectator Blog about possible Labour plans to hold a referendum on introducing a form of proportional representation (the Alternative Vote) on the same day as the UK General Election.

This may have had some credibility 10 years ago or 5 years ago, but not now, in the dying days of an admininstration. As ever with Brown its all about tactics and little to do with vision.

Actually PR is the right thing to do, following the lead of Holyrood and would help reinvigorate elections to Westminster and make all parties work harder to gain and keep all voters' interests. But to dream this up now with 10 months or less to a UK election just smacks of the worst kind of political desperation and lacks any credibility.

Mind you, its good to see that Mr Brown is so keen on referenda.

Is this a sign that he is thinking of allowing Scottish Labour to at least abstain when the Independence Referendum is presented in Holyrood next year? Confused  Smile

I don't really care how or when it gets done, that's all the glory of the political system at work. I am a lukewarm convert to the idea of PR; so I'd happily see it accomplished by these means.

He supports, as any political party I've come across does, referendums when they suit his interests: where the change brought about would do him no real harm.

Quite why you think he'd suddenly start supporting SNP referendums simply because he supports Labour ones is beyond me.

No he's a Brit Nat and would rather lose his left testicle than allow a referendum.

He may be the biggest Brit Nat prime minister of the 20th/21st century after Thatcher.

Anyway, his days are numbered, thank God.  I don't know how much longer I can bear his phony smiling, pug faced drawling voice and that stupid jutting out jaw of his.

What credible basis do you have for suggesting Gordon Brown is a nationalist?
