U.S. troops moving into Romania and Bulgaria | Quote: | The Pentagon is spending more than $100 million to build new military bases in Bulgaria and Romania, even as the Obama administration recently scrapped plans for a missile-defense shield in other parts of Eastern Europe.
Last month, the White House announced it no longer planned to base U.S. missiles and troops in Poland and the Czech Republic. Meanwhile, more than 2,000 U.S. troops — including two squadrons from the Vilseck, Germany-based 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment — were taking part in exercises in nearby Romania and Bulgaria.
The exercises, which began in late June, will run until the end of October. |

At a time when we should be looking to scale back our overseas empire the U.S. government begins moving troops into more countries.

What manner of mythical beast art thou kevin?
what necromancy dost thou employ to tempt and beguile the innocent, the seekers of truth;
thou knowest from the book of words to which you linked that it sayeth:
"Placing troops in those countries would not only be cheaper, but it would move them closer to the volatile Middle East" ( these being the utterances from voices from within the great pentagon)
and yet this you confound with the depolyment of Striker2, warriors stationed in the regions of black forests and gateau without the guile of seasoned practice in the arts of warfare. Would you deny these brave mortals the opportunity to hone their martial skills in the presence of allies that they gain facility in working cooperatively with alien forces and foreign tongues before their predestined deployment to the bad lands of the Af-gan-istan.....where verily and with all assurance they will go (for so it is written).
Your words are as mirrors tangentally opposed which though they spread light yet they bedazzle and confuse. Are they the sirens of Titan? Are they the beacons of wreckers?
"Do not try the patience of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger."

You make me smile ML.
Actually, your posts are always good, unlike my constant turnover of apparently endless drivel peppered occasionally with the odd glimmer of wit and insight.
Keep it up O' Magisterial one.

I can't say I know what exactly you're asking me or what your position on the article is. So I'm not sure how to respond.

From the US Dept Defense press release 20th October:
" The spring/summer rotation of the 1st BCT, 101st Airborne Division (3,700 personnel) and the 2nd SCR (4,000 personnel) continues the U.S. commitment to maintain the current level of forces assigned to the NATO-International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). "
For the full press release:
http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/release.aspx?releaseid=13060
from which it is clear that:
Stryker2 are being deployed as part of normal troop rotation
and that it is to maintain current troop levels
What are YOU suggesting? Enquiring minds would like to know.

were it that simple....
I don't disagree with those general sentiments, but I wouldn't like the US to become "isolationist" overnight a leave a power vacuum in unstable and volatile parts of the world.

now as for those those responsible for the instability and volatility, those responsible for supporting thoroughly nasty people and their henchmen and giving them power and influence.......they should be made to live in those countries....without diplomatic immunity,...... without a passport .....and without TROUSERS for the rest of their natural days. Yep, that would do it!

Scaling back our military wouldn't make us isolationist, it would make us noninterventionist. Isolationism would be removing ourselves completely from the rest of the world, meaning trade and so on. Whereas, I simply want our troops brought home and to continue to trade with the rest of the world. I also think we should be trading with those we don't now. Sanctions don't work because they hurt the people of a nation rather than the government we're supposedly against.

I had hoped that Pres Obama would have done just that. I'm sure many people shared that hope. Is he a busted flush....or playing a long game?

I think most people voted for him based on him being the supposed "anti-war" candidate, but I had no doubt that nothing about our foreign policy would change under his administration. He did at least make it clear that he was going to ramp up the war in Afghanistan. I think people mostly deluded themselves because he claimed he was going to end the war in Iraq, which I'll also believe it when I see it.

saying what you'll do in office is very different from the realities of being in office. he is being found out to a certain extent. this was clear on my recent trip to dc.
