UK Armed Forces are the best?

Seven out of nineteen soldiers have been killed as a result of non-combat situations.

The question needs to be asked - WTF is going on?

Soldier dies in Afghan accident

UK and Canadian-led Nato troops assumed control last month
A British soldier has been killed in an accident in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence says.
The Household Cavalry regiment member was servicing a vehicle at a military base in Helmand province.

The MoD said the soldier's family has been informed about the death and a full investigation will be held.

The last British soldier to die in the country was involved in a traffic accident on 9 August. Ten soldiers have been killed in combat this year.

The death brings the number of British soldiers killed in Afghanistan since 2001 to 19.

Of that number, seven - including the latest casualty - died because of illness, accident, or injuries which were not caused by combat.

UK and Canadian-led Nato troops assumed control of military operations in southern Afghanistan from US-led forces at the end of last month.

British troops are conducting operations from Camp Bastion, near Helmand's provincial capital Lashkar Gah.

Cado

There have been many deaths in the Iraq campaign which weren't combat related. I suppose a good comparison would be to see how other forces fair - if the tally is similar then you know its par for the course.

So combine physically hard work, heavy machinery, heat, non existant roads, the mentality of squadies and people trying to kill you.

In fact - I think there was one point were they worked out that more soldiers got killed in training exercises and accidents than got killed by the enemy. During WW2 in North Africa - more soldiers got taken out by VD than by the Germans.

However, what all the MoD figures neglect to mention are the overall casualty figures or the severity of the injuries - the ratio can be around 7 or 8 to 1.

Wouldn't be surprised if the army is taking a fair battering as far as casualties go.

No, Bush deliberately decide they wouldn't do any official figures.

As to our losses - it is worth remembering that accidents happen to young men at home too. Figures have been produced that a black man from Atlanta has a considerably lower chance of being killed, combat or accident, than on their own streets.

Even Paisley isn't as dangerous as Atlanta but even so.

In virtually every war prior to WW1 more soldiers died of disease than combat but that meant more than 7.
