Unionist campaign collapsesAngus Council's own website has this to say about the composition of the Council | Quote: | Angus Council
Following the 3 May 2007 Scottish Local Government Election the composition of Angus Council is as follows:
The Angus Alliance 15 elected members
SNP 13 elected members
Independent (no group affiliation) 1 elected member
The ruling administration of Angus Council is the Angus Alliance.
TOTAL 29 elected members | Note that there is only one genuine "Independent" on the Council, Councillor Robert Spink, who refused to join with either the "Angus Alliance" or the SNP. The "Angus Alliance" was formed AFTER the 2007 election, by an alliance of Tory, Labour, LIberal-Democrat, and so-called "independent" councillors, with the sole purpose of keeping the SNP out of all council offices. The "Angus Alliance" usually votes as if it were a single political party obeying the party whip. HOWEVER, the usual bloc vote broke down on Thursday 17th September. There was a motion put to the Council by Angus Alliance member Peter Nield, | Quote: | | That this Council condemns the decision by the SNP Justice Minister in releasing Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi and instructs the Chief Executive to write to the First Minister and American Ambassador in such terms. | Now, I thought they might have trouble getting that one passed, and after all it could require only one Angus Alliance member switching their vote for it to fail, but even I was surprised by the actual result. The motion was defeated by 25 votes to 4. It would be hard to find a clearer indication that the Unionist campaign against MacAskill is collapsing.

That's fairly emphatic then! Although to claim the unionist campaign is collapsing may be over-stating it, it is afterall merely the outcome of one council vote.
To be honest though, unless megrahi lives for 'too long' (whatever that means) I think this will continue to be forgotten, already we've moved on to the great witless attack that is Purcell and his "dagger in the heart" and "breadcrumbs from the table" type of comments.
