Welsh Patriots boo "Windsors"

Compatriots,
This is from a Pro-Hanoverian site but it tells of how Wingnut the "Prince of Wales" and his family were given a less than warm welcome by a group of Welsh Patriots. Hat's off to these Welsh protestors for standing up for their country.

Protestors Boo The Queen, Philip, Charles & Camilla In Wales

Written by Joanne Leyland
Wednesday, 01 March 2006
There were a few nervous looks from members of the Royal Family this morning in what was the first major official engagement jointly undertaken by the Queen and Prince Philip, and Charles and Camilla, in the Principality of Wales.

Live TV coverage of the opening of the new Senedd (Welsh for Parliament or Senate) could not hide the fact that the royal party were greeted by a less than welcome and very vocal group of protestors who vigorously booed the royals.

However, it has to be said that there was also a great deal of cheering, especially from groups of children waiting for the royals outside the Parliament.

Despite this, though, it was clear that the booing emanated through to royal ears, especially as the ceremony saw the royal party forced to stand outside — opposite the crowd of protestors — as the National Anthem was played and a fly past undertaken.

Although TV coverage didn't linger long on the protestors, many of whom were holding placards in the air, the BBC did undertake an interview with a Welsh MP who was refusing to go inside the new debating chamber whilst the Queen was inside, this being due to her strong Nationalist, anti-monarchist entiments.

In light of this very public protest from a Member of the Welsh Parliament, it is therefore possible (and perhaps likely) that a majority if not all of the boos were a result of political rather than personal feelings towards the royals.

The subject of Welsh Nationalism (the campaign which calls for 'home rule' for Wales, therefore breaking all ties with England and, in turn, the Queen and family) and the role of the British monarchy in the Principality has been a source of contention for many years.

This isn't the first royal visit to Wales to have resulted in some unwelcome opposition, although at least in this instance they were peaceful protests.

On the day of his Investiture as Prince of Wales on July 1st 1969 — a date which was ironically the birthday of one Diana Spencer (then aged just Cool — security around the Royal Family, VIPs and crowds of onlookers was at its highest as the run-up to the event had been marred by protests and even bombings.

Indeed, riding in an open topped, horse-drawn carriage through the streets around Caernarvon Castle, Prince Charles leaned over and asked an official to explain a noise he had just heard. The heir to the throne was duly told it was a gun salute in the distance. The truth was it was the sound of a bomb exploding.

Although it's believed the negative reactions primarily came from republicans and/or Welsh Nationalists who abhor the concept of the monarchy and English rule in Wales, it was clear that the Prince of Wales himself was a little perturbed by the angry reaction of the protestors situated not far from the platform on which the royal party were forced to stand during the National Anthem before making their way inside the building.

Once inside the Welsh Senate, for a few moments at least the Prince looked visibly preoccupied and possibly even a little upset as he stood with Camilla to listen to a speech. The Prince wouldn't be human if the thought didn't cross his mind for even a moment that the booing may have been aimed predominantly at himself and Camilla.

If this was the case, it would perhaps be understandable if he were genuinely upset by the depth of anger which greeted himself, his wife and parents when you consider he has undertaken over three decades of work for the country in his role as Prince of Wales.

Once inside the actual debating chamber, the official opening ceremony was a great success.

As she has so many times, the Queen once more made a speech opening a Parliament, following which the Royal party listened to a series of speeches, including one from a representative of New South Wales.

The people of the Australian State which takes the name of the Principality have presented the Welsh Senate with a gold mace which now takes pride of place in the Chamber whenever it is in session.

Purely speaking as someone who has followed today's events (and speaking too as a genuine royalist and supporter of the Queen), a remarkable aspect of today's opening ceremony is how TV news has reported the events this lunchtime.

Not one TV News bulletin remarked on the fact the Royal Family were greeted by very noisy boos, nor was the footage shown in which the protestors could be heard or seen. Of course, this will greatly please the Palace, and it has to be said that it likely was only a small but vocal minority who acted in this way so perhaps the news media simply believe this is of little interest or consequence?

However, the fact is that the Queen and Prince of Wales — the man who will likely one day rule throughout the Principality and the rest of Great Britain and the Commonwealth — were (whether we and they like it or not) greeted by angry and very noisy boos.

It is a stark fact which must surely cause a few hearts to beat a little faster inside royal circles, especially considering the scandals and difficulties which have so dogged the monarchy in recent times. The worry about today's events is that it appeared as if the Queen herself was booed, something that we thankfully rarely if ever see.

We'd all also come to believe that the problems of yesteryear, when the Prince of Wales in particular feared stirring angry reactions in the public, were now well behind the monarchy.

Again, speaking purely as an onlooker, it was noticeable that on departing the event, the noise from the anti-monarchists had dissipated, though it isn't known whether this is because the protestors were moved on or had simply left the venue having made their feelings known.

Suffice to say this is one visit to Wales which, for the wrong reasons, the Queen and her son and heir in particular will not forget.

We can only hope that, for the sake of the monarchy, the next time the Royal Family visit the Principality for a major event, they are once more greeted by that familiar warm welcome in the hillsides.
