SUNDAY 17TH JUNE 2007

ASSEMBLE 12PM

BARROWFIELD STREET PARKHEAD (BEHIND CELTIC SUPERSTORE)

ALL WELCOME.

the march is to remember all the members of the wosba who have passed away but in particular thomas 'boydo' boylan. Anyone who has been involved with the republican movement in scotland over the past years will no doubt have known him.

tell us some of the scottish songs that the band alliance will be playing, i asssume they scottish republicans will be playing a greatest hits of scottish republicanism.
Rinty

Wosba are a band alliance of people who support irish republican aims.

They clearly state this on their website and other literature.

Do you follow parades at chinese new year asking them to include scottish songs or do comunists exiled from Chile and/or Iraq who arrange protests and meeting in Scotland have to have scottish songs at their events.

It seems to me that only the irish community in scotland are asked to be more scottish. It sounds like the kind of right wing ranting aimed at muslims in England by the daily mail, or norman tebbits cricket test, yet in scotland it comes from people who are supposed to be progressive.

If you dont like wosba's aims then argue against the, dont tell them that they have to play scottish songs.

I am sure that they do play scottish songs, many irish republican nadcs play flower of scotland in particular and some play "a mans a man...", But I dont see why you would demand it.

I have seen st andrews day parades in canada that have no canadian songs!

i think you'll find that integration of all foreign people living here is being demanded by most of the uk population. so there!
Rinty

"i think you'll find that integration of all foreign people living here is being demanded by most of the uk population. so there!"

I doubt that very much. Most British people have too much pride in their own local culture and personal identity to be "integrated", why demand it of someone else?

Integration means a coming together of cultures, not one devouring the other. However, there is plenty of room for other cultures to express themselves.

To me, it is one of the good things about Britain. We are built on a multitude of cultures that exist happily together and cross over each other at times.

Welsh, gaelic, a variety of english cultures, scots, ulster scots, irish.... there is no need for one to die out to accomodate the other or one to swallow the other, the "integration" is a natural process where the cultures continue, but probably influenced by the other cultures around.

"drinking culure" is pretty popular in the UK but has integrated indian food into it!

My own family's "culture", if we have a specific one, is an immigrant culture, keeping its roots alive while also having integrated many of the host countries culture into our own.

well i can think of no-one who does not believe that people descended from other countries such as ireland, pakistan, china, usa, nigeria etc. should make more of an effort to integrate in terms of culture. many of societies ills stem from lack of integration and the subsequnt tension that arises from that.

i will most lileky end up living in canada and australia and plan to fully integrate into their culture, wat of life and respect it as well. i'm not for living in the past, moving on is moving up.
Rinty

"well i can think of no-one who does not believe that people descended from other countries such as ireland, pakistan, china, usa, nigeria etc. should make more of an effort to integrate in terms of culture."

you should get out more. culture works both ways as does integration. As I said before integration is two or more cultures coming together not assimilatioon, which is what I think that you are talking about.

The people who believe what you are claiming they do must not know many people from those cultures if their general view is that they dont integrate.

"many of societies ills stem from lack of integration and the subsequnt tension that arises from that. "

Then the obvious solution is to remove the demand for integration then the friction will disappear. If I dont ask you to dance, I wont get annoyed when you refuse!

irish republicans may attend scottish independence events individually but as groups we tend not to be invited.

my own organisation gets invited by the srsm to their events but outwith that i cant think of any scottish nationalist groups that would invite us officially.

on the nationality issue it doesnt really matter what nationality they consider themselves but what they believe.

personally i would say i am scottish but am proud of my families irish roots, some may consider themselve irish and thats up to them.

The Pollock and Thornliebank RFB played at a Scottish Republican Socialist Convention on Friday night in Glasgow. Amongst the tunes were Flower of Scotland, Glencoe and Scots Wha Hae. Obviously there were Irish Republican tunes as well.
Saor Alba agus Saor Eire.
parkhead_rfb

should have posted that before hand and i would have attended.

not seen the guys who run the ptrfb for a few weeks so was unaware it was on.
iainmhor

Sorry PRFB but im a very rare visitor to this forum, but ill make sure republican and republican socialist events are posted on here in future.

The annual John MacLean march is on Sunday December 2nd from Eastwood Cemetery to the MacLean Cairn at Pollockshaws shopping centre with a social in Caireys Bar across the street to follow.

PTRFB will be on the march, hope other WOSBA bands can make it and theres music from Ted Christopher and the Fife Republic Ceilidh Band maybe others.

Speakers will be from SRSM, the wider Republican family, the Scottish left and international guests from the Welsh Republican Movement and America.

even if my band cant make it i should attend myself.

I live in England there are Caledonian societies and Pipebands by the score. All reflecting the Scottish community in England, they are not however regularly asked to play 'Jerusalem' or 'land of hope and glory' on the pipes.

I may be going a bit off piste here, but:

Corby has a significant Irish community as well as Scots. The Irish Centre and Grampian Club (one of the main Scottish centres in the town) are next door to each other.

Both clubs have members who are also members of the other club! A leaf should be taken out of these guys books. I have no problem with Irish folk and their sons and daughters celebrating their country and being passionate about their countries politics whilst residing in Scotland.

I know a couple of Irish lads who get bevvied with their Scots mates on frequent trips to god knows where supporting the Scottish national football side - they like football, travelling, the cameradery and getting drunk. (Their Scots mates do the same when RoI play from time to time).

The benefit for them is they get pissed for free as they keep getting drinks bought for them by other fans they meet when they open their mouths in bars and a strong Irish accent is to be heard!

There is now an Irish Caledonian Society in the RoI. So, lets all accept and enjoy each others culture and not deride folk for playing or not playing tunes etc..

I don't see irish republicanism as somehow anti-Scottish, and vice versa. It is wrong that some individuals may perpetuate this.

Corby Boy i couldnt agree more with the sentiments you expressed in your post. Heres to an end to sectarianism, bigotry and chauvinism against others.
Corby Boy

Thanks IainMhor.

The bigotry thing, I understand its origins etc.. but I just don't get.

The Irish, whether north or south, and the Scots, highlander or lowlander are so similar in outlook on life, it is uncanny. This is a reflection of our shared culture (in many respects), more so I would argue than any other nation on the planet.

I have visited Ireland on a number of occasions and to me it feels familiar, it is very like Scotland in so many ways (and different in others of course). More so than England or Wales even.
