Year-long celebration for Union anniversary

"DETAILS of a series of events to mark the 300th anniversary of the 1707 Act of Union were unveiled yesterday.

Highlights of the year-long celebrations of the decision to merge the parliaments of Scotland and England include exhibitions, debates, competitions and a commemorative coin.

National Museums Scotland will stage an exhibition of related objects and documents, while the National Galleries of Scotland will exhibit portraits of key figures associated with the Union.

Starting in May, a series of seminars, book launches and a debate exploring the events, causes and arguments surrounding the Union will be staged by the National Library of Scotland.

Announcing the plans at Holyrood, the culture minister, Patricia Ferguson, said it was a significant event in Scotland's history, which had benefited the country.

Ms Ferguson also said a £2 coin, in Scottish and English versions, would be designed to celebrate the 300-year association and displayed in exhibitions north and south of the Border."

I dont know about you lot, but if those are the highlights I think I'll stay at home. If I was a unionist I'd be wanting huge street parties, firework displays, parades, live bands etc, something nationwide that would atleast be on par with Hogmany - but a measly coin and a few debates... They obviously dont think they'd get much of a turnout.

I think there is an obvious reason that they don't want to promote it too much.

People might start exploring the history of the union, start asking qestions and actually start debating it's relevance today.

I'd love it if they started throwing street parties and waving UJs all over the place - it would do wonders for the cause of Independence...

Never mind the fact that in most parts, noone would turn up. And in the parts where folk did turn up, events would most likely resemble an orange march. Not the forward looking Union that Brown wants to promote.

looks like the BBC have opened up debate on the issue on their news site http://newsforums.bbc.co.uk/nol/t...;edition=1&ttl=20061110104407
No posts as of yet, but im sure it'll be interesting to follow.

I really don't think there will be many people bothering to celebrate the Union. Smile Methinks the powers that be are going to end up wishing they had quietly ignored it.
Corby Boy

£2 is about as much as the union is worth, it equates to what Scotland gets back from N Sea Oil, the other billions sitting in G Broon's back pocket.

Pity it wasn't a three pound coin... could convert it to 30 (10p) pieces of silver.
Cado

I saw a bit of this debate on 'Scottish Questions' in Westminster on TV (insomnia...)

A Tory asked what reciprocal celebrations would be planned in England - the reply was "um, er, ah, we'll put on something, er somewhere, I'm sure...."

Anyway...it seems to becoming more fashionable these days to have a divorce party.... Very Happy

The "have your say" section the BBC put up about "Should Scotland celebrate the Act of Union?" appears to have been hidden away, you cant actually get to it from the news site, not that I can see anyway - I can get to it from the link I posted in here though - obviously the majority of comments were not much to their liking. However there is a new far less threatening thread "What are Scotland's most important historic events?" Which seems to have been made available instead....

I found that quite humorous, lets celebrate the union by having seperate coins for each country Laughing

Lets 'celebrate' 300 years of London rule by having big bonfires with Union flags perched on top and with Union Hand flags to be thrown on as the fire blazes away

Weren't there towns where the articles of Union were burned in 1707? Maybe we should recreate those events. Dumfries and Stirling wasn't it?
Mctosh45

240 Posts, most pro independence very few see anything to celebrate!

Garye, what a very good idea! I'm sure Dumfries & Stirling would be up for it!

Someone in the comments section below that article said they were going to donate every 2 pound coin they come across to Independence First. Now that is a good idea. Not that I'm biased or anything Very Happy.
SLG

Haha, that is a good idea. If they're going to force this on us, then we should use it against them. If you can afford it I can't think of anything better to do with these £2 coins.

Typically of the BBC, for such an important debate they closed the Have your Say on Should Scotland celebrate the Act of Union?
on Saturday 11th, just 1 day after they opened it
Its incredible that a body thats part funded by Scots, doesnt actually like
to debate Scottish issues OK Im not really surprised
SouthernJock

BBC have opened up another forum
What are Scotland's most important historic events?
As usual its well hidden
I found it, while looking for something else
