Based on the last two performances, I wouldn't want to see Burley go, but he has got to build on this.

Think he will get a vote of confidence from the SFA this week

good decision.  the real issue was hopefully dealt with at the meeting - who is in charge of what?

Next time an incident comes up, Burley should know whether its his decision or not, and whoever deals with it shouldnt face contradictory statements from his boss!

Now, if Boyd would apologise to his former Scotland team-mates, fans and manager and ask back that would be another bonus.

I think he could also make a way back for Alan McGregor, whose age means he faces a longer ban than Barry Ferguson.  Ferguson was the disruptive influence, as Paul le Guen!

Burley should approach Ferguson to ask him to allow MGregor back.  If Ferguson agrees to retire from internationals the ban could be lifted.

Then we can move on

I would suggest that he is as equally hopeless as Strachan and Souness.

Souness today declared his position.  He will not manage again because of "overpaid" player's egos, Loch Lomond Boozegate and petulant 'pick me' strikers come to mind.

Burley took Ipswich to 5th in the Premiership and turned Hearts into title contenders in a few short months.  We need continuity and if the job was vacant, his CV would match any of the applicants.

If you can't win something with Celtic and Rangers, then there is something seriously wrong.

In England, Strachan Souness and Burley all have a good CV.  Burley is in the job, Souness doesnt want to get back into management.

I dont think that it would make much difference, all are good at motivating teams, and getting to 2012 will be difficult.  A new manager cant sign new players, cant control injuries, so would have the same squad and much the same options for a first eleven.

It really depends on the draw, we will be in pot three and whoever we get from pot 2 and pot 4 will determine whether we qualify, more than a change of manager will, in my opinion.

Burley showed some good elements in the end of the campaign. He has been dealt a great deal of bad luck, e.g half the Rangers team turning their back on him, Iwelumo's miss, injuries, Kenny Miller's sitters? Holland away - he had a great chance at 0-0, Norway away 0-0, and Holland 0-0. If he managed to score even one of those chances, who knows what might have happened?
I'm not blaming Miller, He's a work horse and gives his all, but he is not a goal scorer.

Who would take the job?
I also don't understand the amount of critisism Jas Calderwood gets. Fair enough, he is hardly an inspirational interviewer, but his track record at Dunfermline and Aberdeen is pretty decent. Constant top 5 and European Cup places.

Not sure at all about Burley, I wish him all the best, he seems a good man and the way he talks, he is passionate and really wants the job. I'd want the job too, he deserves another chance at it, and hopefully we can take the good moment of Macedonia/Holland. Ok, the first half we were pretty dire against the Mac's, but that second half was some of best Football that I've seen Scotland play in a few years, Just as good as that Ukraine game from 2007.
Holland - We were excellent in the first 60mins, disappointed that we took our foot off the gas in the 2nd half.

If anything, Burley's now got at least a year until our next competitive game. I hope we use the friendlies well. We'll see possibly Burley's plans to take us forward, and we should look to use all our free dates. Even play smaller nations, e.g Moldova, New Zealand etc to try some of the Young Players that are coming from, and take Scotland on the road Tannadice, McDiarmid Park etc.

the trouble with using friendlies to try young players is that our fans and press will judge Burley on his results in friendlies.  If he goes down the Bertie Vogts road of using friendlies to blood new players and experiment, it could cost him his job.

And there is also merit in using friendlies to get a settled team and get players used to playing together in burleys formation.  The problem with that is the reluctance of clubs to allow players to take part in friendlies during a season

landg "burely will take us nowhere.telling ye"

The chances are that he wont, but it is impossible to say that changing to another manager would take us anywhere either.  Our last 3 managers took us nowhere, we havent been to a finals of a tournament since France in 1998.

Scotland, like the old firm in europe, are always a bounce of the ball, a bit of luck, a refereeing decision, a missed chance, a goalkeeping mistake, away from success or failure. when it goes our way we make it, when it doesnt we dont.

I just cannot see any reasonable argument so far for changing the manager.

Continuity? We've had 4 different bosses for the last 4 campaigns, how about a bit of stability.

Burley has made mistakes but Scotland could do a lot worse. Here's hoping he's learned from the mistakes he has made. I'd like to see him patch things up with Boyd, but 'backpass Barry' won't be missed.

You dont need one, he already has the position, a reasonable argument for someone else coming in is the question.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

I don't think Burley is as clever or able a manager as Walter Smith is, who I think having learnt from Sir Alex during his time as his assistant at Man Utd a few years ago is probably the best manager (other than Sir Alex) to come out of Scotland. However, he IS a good manager and while he has made mistakes he is perfectly able to do the job. More so than the likes of Grahame Souness (who's working at the moment as a pundit for RTE in Ireland), Big Eck and Gordon Strachan.

Rinty makes a good point when he mentions that regardless of who the Gaffer is he'll still roughly have the same pool of players to pick from. While I don't like Souness I think given the reason he's ruled himself out that a leaf could be taken out of his book - that the egos of both Burley and Boyd should be left aside for the good of Scottish football. The same goes for McGregor. Both of these players have huge talents that can certainly help Scottish football.
