In the 'about england' section

"During the dark days of 1940 it was the English people who bore the brunt of German aggression and it was the English people who steadfastly refused to yield as Hitler tried in vain to bomb them into submission. Our island was the sole beacon of hope left for the subjugated peoples of Europe - Britain stood alone against tyranny and, along with our allies, saved western civilisation from destruction."

What's BNP'ish about that? There's nothing wrong with being proud of our Anglo-Saxon heritage...

I think I might buy one. Cool

If you saw someone with a t-shirt saying 'celtic - strong and proud', would you have a problem with it?

There does seem to be a bit of a racial element there that you don't get in Scotland, but it's maybe a bit cynical to look at it like that.

It's the over-emphasis of the White dragon on the site that irks me - that coupled with the 'Anglo-Saxon' racial purity type stuff.

I think Celtic is seen as something entirely different, based upon a shared culture and not determined upon race the way this seems to be.

I don't know, as far as I can see (esp in the USA) the white supremacist movement tend to use the term Anglo-Celtic.

The story of the White Dragon is as old as the idea of “England” itself. Merlin’s prophecies foretell a battle between a red dragon and a white dragon: the red being the Welsh Celtic Britons, the white being the invading Saxons, Jutes and Angles who became known as the “English”. There are many different versions of these myths and, depending whose side the writer was on, a different dragon won! The White Dragon was the emblem of Wessex, the territory of the West Saxons, the most powerful of the seven kingdoms of England before they merged in the 10th century. King Alfred the Great, the first person to call himself “King of England”, fought under a white dragon banner when he defeated the Vikings. King Harold also fought under the white dragon when he lost to the Normans in 1066. You can clearly see the dragon embroidered over Harold’s fallen body in the Bayeux Tapestry.

Is'nt that something like W.A.S.P ? White Anglo-Saxon Person(s) There is nothing wrong about being proud of being an Anglo-Saxon but it seems to have become synonymous with being White! In other words making a racists statement.

White Anglo Saxon Protestant (WASP).

I see no problem in the t-shirt. If it had an Union Jack with Anglo Saxon, fair enough. But let the English clelebrate their Anglo Saxon heritage ifd they want to. Claiming it to be racists does no one favours.

Thehere is a legend abour the Red Dragon and the White Dragon having a fight over territory.

Whereas Celticism is seen as being more acceptable, thats not to mean we should stop the English making Anglo Saxonism acceptable (even though kst of England should be Celtic Laughing ).

Not claiming Cymro, anyone who was to wear a t-shirt with W.A.S.P down here in the caribbean, you might just get your self in some hot water. Being seen as racist does no one any favours.

Sorry I don't think I made myself very clear.

The T-shirt on top of this thread, with the Anglo Saxon wirrten on it and the White draqon with the flag of St George I don't have a problem with.

You refered to WASP (and asked if it was White Anglo Saxon Persons), I was only stating it was 'Protestants' that the letter 'P' stands for. Sorry. If it was a t-shirt glorifing and promoting 'WASP', then I certainly would have a problem with it, because WASP certainly where a racist 'group' in the US. I don't think this t-shirt has anything to do with these racists though.

And I wouldn't be stupid enough to wear a WASP t-shirt anywhere, including the Carribbean! Laughing

I find it odd that the English would adopt a dragon for an emblem and adopt a patron saint whose main achievement seems to be slaying a dragon.

hai Cyrmo, i hear you, I'm just saying that the words Anglo-Saxon printed on a t-shirt in the MINDS of caribbean people would more than likely be taken as a "mighty whitey" gesture as opposed to having just England or what ever,For me I dont have an issue with it personally.I'm just saying that people of different cultures see things in different ways. sunny Mr. Green

isnt most of this about context though? I can see the point of Cymro that why shouldn't English people be allowed to celebrate their national identity, i mean we do. But in the context of the website which makes such statements as

Quote:
the English people who steadfastly refused to yield as Hitler tried in vain to bomb them into submission

it can be seen as offensive and also extremely arrogant. Therefore this might upset people.

My dear little people ... An Englishman is God's finest creation ... and of course I'm not talking about the plebs ... The saying obviously refers to the quintessential English aristocrat, with the necessary credentials, family shield, motto, castle and a minimum of £300 in the bank, dontcha know?
