Poor Poppy's weekend. . .

We took my brother in law and his wife, the man who got the tombstone on his birthday cake, out Saturday morning in the surrey. The left side horse, Poppy, came up lame, so we didn't stay out long, obviously. When we got home we pulled off her shoe and cleaned out her hoof, no owies readily visible, so we got the hoof tester out and did a pressure test with no apparent reaction (A pressure test will show where the bruise is or the abscess has formed). We let her limp around for a couple of hours and did a pressure test again and this time got a pull back from her. The hubby drilled into the hoof to open up the bruise. No luck. We dosed her with some iodine, put a boot on her and let her go. She didn't much like the boot and chased herself all around trying to get it off. A lot of times this will work whatever is bothering them to a head, and I guess it did. We did another pressure test this evening and got even more reaction from her, drilled in a new spot and blood just shot out of her foot! No pus so apparently it hadn't abscessed, yet, and we got the pressure off the bruise. Soaked the hoof in warm Epsom salt water, dosed her with more iodine, put the boot back on and let her go. She's limping but not like she was. Poor girl, she's such a sweet horse, I hate to see her hurt. She didn't kick, managed to pull her foot out of the hubby's grasp once, told me when she was going to try to bite him and really wanted to bite me but controlled herself at that point. My arm was pretty well green and slimy but she felt better after the drilling was done. Then the iodine must have stung because that's when she tried to bite the hubby. The other horses stood around in a huddle watching, one of them thought she'd like to taste the Epsom salty water, the others were hoping for horse treats. When they heard the Dremmil drill, they all left. We gave Poppy a shot of penicillin and let her go, she snorted and blew about things, but seems easier on her foot.

Poor Poppy. An abcess is soooo painful. Hope she gets better soon.

It might help if you broke it down and spaced it out into sub-paras, instead of being one whole splurge on the page.

Bloodshed is one word btw! Just thought you'd like to know. Very Happy

Poppy is walking MUCH better this afternoon, she isn't happy about soaking and dosing but at least she's stopped fighting it. Of course, my pockets full of horse treats are helping with attitude!
