Just this morning finished P.D. James' Lighthouse. Typical for her, very good with interesting twists for the characters.
Not sure what exactly to begin next. . . so many books, so limited in time! I'll have to decide by tonight!

PD James. Books for 7 year-olds! The word "iimited" certainly does apply here in more senses than one, doesn't it?? |

Then, you should be able to enjoy them without interpretation.

It was a typo! Didn't spot that. Thank you so much for reading over my post with a microscope in this attempt to catch me out! Congratulations on your perspicacity!
And my reading material is of a much quality than PD James. Have you not kept up?? |

Apparently not, I'm reading what you've posted recently!
I'm still in 'close inspection mode' anyway, it's a hazard of a year spent scrutinizing the written work of 12 year olds. . . _________________ Mamas don't let you cowboys grow up to be babies. . . |

Been zipping through some kids books for next year. Susan Coopers the Dark is Rising series, A String In The Harp, Adam of the Road . . . it's fast, it's light, it's putting me ahead of the kids. _________________ Mamas don't let you cowboys grow up to be babies. . . |

I read all the Harry Potters for the same reason. Nephews and neices asking questions about books and films. Same with the Pullman Northern Lights trilogy. Kids books aren't just for kids!!! _________________ Laird of Treverlen |

Just read Ghost by Robert Harris,
Based on Tony Blair and the Iraq War, it is quite a good read. _________________ Visit the Our Scotland Blog at http://our-scotland.blogspot.com/ |

Got 2 Joanne Harris books from paperbackswap.com. I finished Blackberry Wine last night and started Holy Fools this morning.
Blackberry Wine was pretty good, sort of an extension of the place and characters in Chocolat.
I've got an Elizabeth George one coming from pbs.com next. _________________ Mamas don't let you cowboys grow up to be babies. . . |

I've been buying lots of old books I hadn't read before on Amazon.co.uk
They have a 2nd-hand book service, where you can buy books in very good condition for as little as 1p ... though the postal rate is £2.60 for each one. I've bought around 85 books in the last year because it's so cheap.
That's why I have money. I don't waste it!
And now I've shared that little gem with you ... I hope you start using it ... and get those books you always wanted to read but never got round to. |

Going back a bit - to being a young boy on the very first day of school -
a page from Cider with Rosie by Laurie Lee was put on our chairs
and the page dealt with sitting there for the present...
some children let it go way above their heads, or thought they might get a present, as Laurie Lee also entertained such a notion in his story,
but I remembered to hunt down the book that was considered appropriate enough to encourage some independent thought on the very first day of school life, must have been ten or eleven when I found a second hand version, and check out unwanted books at every type of store ever since.
A bit of thinking for yourself is all school should definately have to provide - after that is just a leading out process for whatever skills you possess.[/i] _________________ Scotland deserves a First rate Parliament for a First rate People

I've just finished reading Whisky Dreams about the guyes who restarted the Bruichladdich distillary on Islay - I was to own a distiallery now!
When I was up in Oban two weeks ago I got a new copy of Stone of Destiny which I'm about to start reading after I've finished 'Y Gwledydd Bychain' (The Small Countries) by Bethan Gwanas. Ian Hamilton was sigining copies of the book in Oban while I was there which was good. |

| I've just re-read Mary Stewart's Merlin quartet ... The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills, The Last Enchantment and The Wicked Day ... very few authors can really capture the atmosphere of the Dark Ages and the Arthurian Saga as well as this. Completely believable and highly recommended! |

I am currently editing a book for a scottish writer called (working title) "skarey raw". I know the writer well and he is very good in my (biased) opinion. But this is shaping up to be his masterpiece.
When it is nearer complaetion I will give you the full title and hope to be able to say that it is one of the best scottish books for years.
Currently there is a very good novel about the music industry called "kill your friends' by John Niven which is worth a read. John, like many of our great writers, is originally from Ayrshire. I knew him from my time in the music business and this contains a few characters who I recognise. |
