Jewel In The Crown. . . You REALLY have to WANT to read it to get through it, it's a lot of book. If you are a fan of British/Indian history or politics, AND you like a challenging, deep read, you will find it interesting. It was a bit much for a vacation read, but it did serve to fill a lot of waiting and down time arouind airports and on flights. . . .

Last night, I finished Teacher Man, it is the best and most upbeat of Frank McCort's books. I really enjoyed it. He goes a lot into his teaching experiences and writes about kids and families he encounters along his career. It's not nearly so depressing or so longingly sad as Angelas Ashes and 'Tis. I enjoyed them and they are quite good but this third one I think is by far his best. He fulfills the last chapter well, (which consists only of "I will.") and he does! He is so good at getting the 'flavor' of people across, it's a very good book. If you are a teacher you would enjoy his comments about ATTO!

This morinig I began Joanne Harris' Coastliners, like a lot of her books it's set in France, so far vey good.

Re-reading for the umpteenth time Sword at Sunset by Rosemary Sutcliff. Wracked with very painful arthritis in her hands, she wrote this Arthurian novel in '63. Stripping away the overlay of myth and legend, she tells the tale of the warrior Artos, lieutenant of Ambrosius, High King of the Britons, who became the original of Arthur. It's a magnificent story, the first of all the subsequent Arthurian tales of 5th and 6th century Britain.

Can't recommend it highly enough!

I just finished Memoirs of a Geisha.

Very good book, although I have learned there is a bit of controversy regarding some inaccurate elements and some sources that were revealed after being assured they wouldn't be. BUT, it doesn't change the fact that the story is very good, an interesting look into a very fascinating culture.

I may have to go visit Japan now! LOL

I have a quick and easy Dick Frances murder mystery to reread tonight, (To The Hilt) then I can hit the Library tomorrow for something new.

I'm reading a corker at the moment, "Confessions of an Economic Hitman" by John Perkins. It's the story of how America has become the world's only superpower and Empire by way of force, not by the use of war but rather loans and 'favours'. A must read for anyone who wants to know why war is always a last resort for the American Empire.

As an EHM (as he refers to himself), John has seen firsthand the effects that this empire building has had on the less developed nations of the world.

I've just started to read 'Thirteen Moons' an American Frontier type novel in which scots settlers who spoke the Gaelic are mentioned and their off spring, half-bloods by, in this case cherokee Indians.

Unbelieveably,it also mentions slaves brought in from the West Indies and Barbados Rum! Where it was black. It isn't now so it was either a guess or it had a lot of molasses in it back in those days!

The book is by Charles Frazier the author of 'Cold mountain' didn't read that book but I enjoyed the Movie.I quite like these Frontier type stories though.

Anyone read 'Damn Rebel Bitches of the 45' by Maggie Craig. Great book about some of the women who took part in the rising.

I finished The Story of Rolf and the Viking Bow last night and will finish Out of Africa this weekend. Reading Rolf for school Out for fun and I'm reading Island of the Blue Dolphins out loud to my class. Good thing I like to read!

I'm going to start The Book and th Dragon, another one for school next.

I've also got 5 or 6 books coming from the paperback swap website, some Elizabeth George stuff, James Hilton, several things from the Number One Ladies Detective Agency series. Fun stuff!

I saw the movie "Out of Africa" and read the book. I thought it was OK but it bugs me when I see women getting into relationships which spell trouble from day one!

Who th' hell wants to live like that! Rolling Eyes
