Please, I have two question for a historian.  I have read an article about Glasgow in Realm magazine (Heritage magazine in UK).  Two things I'd like to know.

1.  The article says that Glasgow got its Celtic name of  "Glas Cu" in the 6th century.  Does "Glas Cu" translate into English?  If so, what is it, please?

2.  Later, the article says that "Glasgow" translates to "Dear Green Place".  Does "glas" translate to "green" or "blue"?

Thank you.  Hazel

Wel in Welsh you have the word Glas which now means Blue, however the world glaswellt is for grass (which is obviously green not blue) so there are links between the two colours.

I once heard that Glasgow came from an old Brythonic / Welsh word "Glas Goed" (would literally be translated as Green (or Blue but I doubt it) Wood.

I may be wrong also but i remember an old guy in a pub in the west end of Glasgow tellin me the Gaelic translation worked out at "walk the dog" although as sources go, old men in pubs arent usually the way to go!  Very Happy
