Ciamar a tha sibh?
The 2009 St Andrew's Day Rally takes place on Saturday 28 November from 4.30pm in Edinburgh.
Each year this event is growing in stature, and rightly so. For years this day has been played down by our so called government representatives. They have never wanted any sort of national pride to be celebrated among the people of Scotland.

Now with a nationalist devolved government, and St Andrews day a national holiday, people are turning out more and more to celebrate the feast day of our patron saint and to celebrate the pride in our own national identity.
I hope to see you there.

I can't be there myself but I hope there will be oatcakes, haggis, tattie scones, scones and the like. Whisky optional.
The more Scotland festivals the better.
My thoughts are that mid-summer's day should be a national holiday in Scotland, call it 'Scotland day' or 'Freedom day'. _________________ Every man dies, not every man really lives.

moderation add's to my air of mystery. this thread just add's to my aching ribs.
exaggerating is rife on this forum but i'm not exaggerating when i say this is the funniest i've ever seen. thoughn some of the mad rants from parkhead-rfb are quite brilliant as well. this is the best though.

I actually agree with his/her second point. Just because it's presented in a fairly ignorant fashion doesn't make it wrong.
The idea of a "freedom day" sounds like a hideous idea. I can't say I'm all that enammered with any sort of 'day of national pride', people will either have national pride or they won't. _________________ My blog - http://manaboutthehouse.wordpress.com

It's his posting style rather than the contents of his post. I say "his" because I cannot imagine many women being as ignorant as landg. _________________ "My instinct is to agree with your opinion of his verse, but I've never so much as glanced at it." - agentmancuso |

Well, I was being lightly humourous but if you find this the equivalent of the ribald madcap wit and brevity that tickles your ribs... it's all to the good.
Glad you're happy... try posting without inhaling. _________________ Every man dies, not every man really lives.

Frankly, I think it's his grammar (or lack of - though this is forgivable) or maybe it's his spelling or perhaps it's his tone or even his written expression.
It could simply be an over indulgence of unmentionable substances.
But I do think he's happy or at least he seems happy... _________________ Every man dies, not every man really lives.

I am pleased to see people are taking the effort to celebrate St Andrew's Day. I see nothing funny about it unless some individuals consider it is amusing to celebrate a day of national culture in Scotland. _________________ “For socialists, independence is not about the colour or type of flag flying on our public buildings. I haven't read landg's post because it is in the ignoble doldrums of troll purgatory but I'm sure he's going to be a killjoy about the whole thing. _________________ Every man dies, not every man really lives.

The 2009 St Andrew's Day Rally will take place on Saturday 28th November, at 16:30 pm. The route will be the same as last year - assembling on the Castle Esplanade from 16:00 (4 pm) to march off at 16:30, led (as always) by the Stockbridge Pipe Band. The marchers will progress all the way down the Royal Mile, finishing outside the Parliament buildings by Holyrood where speeches will be made. This year's speakers include author David R Ross, plus music from Ted Christopher. Following this, there will be an evening's entertainment held in the Three Sisters, in the Cowgate. Tickets for this are priced at £15, and the cost includes a buffet and three bands - the ever-popular Fiery Jack, back by public demand; Albannach; and Ted (better than Elvis) Christopher! Doors open at 7 pm, event finishes at 12:45 am. Tickets can be booked by contacting John on 07511660058. _________________ www.football-live.co.nr

What exactly does one do on St. Andrew's Day? It's not a nationally observed holiday here in the U.S. so I genuinely don't know. _________________ "Power always thinks it has a great soul and vast views beyond the comprehension of the weak, and that it is doing God's service when it is violating all his laws." - John Adams |

It has only just been recognised as a holiday in Scotland (and is only a sort of voluntary holiday) so traditions haven't really developed yet. Given its timing (30th of November) I'd like to see it become something similar to your Thanksgiving.
The SNP government is trying to make it the starting point of a two month long "Winter Festival" which ends on Robert Burns' birthday.
