Quote:
The Liberal Democrats have moved to distance themselves from their biggest donor following his arrest on fraud charges in Spain.

Scottish businessman Michael Brown is being extradited to the UK to face a number of charges including fraud, forgery and obtaining by deception.

Mr Brown donated more than £2m to the Lib Dems ahead of the last election.

But a party spokesman stressed there was "no connection" between the charges and Mr Brown's donations.

More proof, if it were needed, that the LibDems' claims to be purer than pure (rather than just holier than thou) are as hollow as their election promises.

By far their biggest donor as well. Since 2005, he has donated about a third of all registered Lib Dem donations. He shouldn't even be allowed to do it as he is not a UK resident and donated through a company he seems to have set up at least partly for that purpose. I suppose he may end up a UK resident after getting extradited though Laughing

While he was donating to the SNP he was registered as a UK resident, yes. Whether he is no, I don't know. AFAIK he doesn't donate money to the SNP any more.

Do you think it's right that non UK residents should be able to donate money to UK parties?

Oops - Click Here

I suppose this is an advantage of having very little funding like the SNP has!

"Do you think it's right that non UK residents should be able to donate money to UK parties?"

I am uncomfortable with non residents who are UK citizens doing so. I have, on occasion, blogged about the undemocratic nature of entirely foreign bodies doing so. There is a long history of US foundations, George Soros & "pro-democracy" western NGOs funding "democratic opposition" groups in Serbia, Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus & Nicaragua. Unfortunately western media coverage of such tends to be entirely favourable, which establishes a precedent.

I'm glad we agree that the Lib Dems should not have accepted this person's money, even before the fraud came to light.
