Ar Cànan, Ar Ceòl, Ar-a-mach (‘Our language, our music, [our] revolution’) is the first ever full-length Gaelic rock album by veteran Edinburgh band Oi Polloi. It blends heavy anarcho-punk music with highly politicised lyrics.
While traditional Gaelic music is very popular, there is no Gaelic rock music scene. Although Gaelic speakers are as keen consumers of modern English-language rock, pop and dance music as the general Scottish public, there has always been some resistance to the very idea of Gaelic being used for such music.
So linked have Gaelic and traditional music become in the public mind that some traditional music fans feel contemporary music to be intrinsically “un-Gaelic”. Similarly, many contemporary music fans feel that English is the only appropriate medium for modern music.
Until recently, the only band performing contemporary music through the medium of Gaelic were pop-rockers Runrig. While Runrig were a very popular and influential band, they have now been together for over 30 years and have been making less and less use of Gaelic in their recordings in recent years. Their style is also considered too ‘middle of the road’ by many younger Gaelic speakers.
The music of Oi Polloi marks a radical departure from that of Runrig, featuring heavy guitar and outspoken and often explicit lyrics. Topics covered in the album feature anti-capitalism, anti-fascism and the destruction of the British state.
While Ar Cànan, Ar Ceòl is the first all-Gaelic rock album, Skye based punks Mill a h-Uile Rud became the first band to release an all-Gaelic punk EP in 2004.
It remains to be seen whether the work of Oi Polloi and Mill a h-Uile Rud will stimulate other Gaelic speakers to produce contemporary rock music in their own language. (Eurolang 2006)
