From Holyrood.com. I find it really refreshing to see that our Parliament is willing to host this.

21st November 2005
Prominent Chechen leaders Ahmed Zakaev and Khassan Baev will visit the Scottish Parliament later this week to highlight the ongoing conflict in their homeland.
Aid agencies estimate that one quarter of the Chechen population has been killed or made homeless in fighting against Russian armed forces during two periods, 1994-96 and 1999 to the present day.
Russia considers Chechnya a renegade province while the majority of the Chechen population supports independence. Years of fighting have led to the death or exile of moderates like President Aslan Maskhadov, killed by Russian forces earlier this year, and Zakaev, elected Deputy Prime Minister of Chechnya in 1997, allowing hardline Islamist leaders such as Shamil Baseav, blamed for the Moscow theatre siege and the Beslan massacre, to grow in power.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for Zakaev, who has asylum status in Britain, to be extradited to Russia to face trial on terrorism charges. Baev is a surgeon who operated on thousands of victims of the war, often in horrific conditions, and has written a widely-acclaimed book ‘The Oath – A Surgeon Under Fire’ about his experiences.
Baev and Zakaev will also address meetings in Glasgow and Edinburgh |

I would love the chance to hear the accounts of these two individuals. Are there details of the meetings, are they public? _________________ If you remove the English army to-morrow and hoist the green flag over Dublin Castle, unless you set about the organisation of the Socialist Republic your efforts would be in vain. - James Connolly |

That's the entire article that I posted. I can't see any other information at the moment. It says that they will be talking in Glasgow and Edinburgh as well as at the Parliament. I'm sure these will be open meeting. I'll post if I can find out anything else. |

I think it's good that we are able to do these sorts of things - it shows that the parliament is outward looking and can only be beneficial to Scottish thinking as a whole. _________________ "Every single person on this planet is unique. Just like everyone else..." - Random Guy in Edinburgh Pub

Ahmed Zakaev, who was elected deputy prime minister in 1997, and Khassan Baev, a surgeon who performed on thousands of war victims, will speak at the Scottish Parliament and at Augustine Church in George IV Bridge tomorrow. |
In the Evening News. Still no more details other than that though. |

Are the media trying to sweep this under the carpet? _________________ If you remove the English army to-morrow and hoist the green flag over Dublin Castle, unless you set about the organisation of the Socialist Republic your efforts would be in vain. - James Connolly |

It's definately not getting a profile at all is it. Compared to other recent visitors like the Dalai Lama and the Malawian president. The whole situation in Chechnya is vastly under-reported. We wouldn't want to upset our Russian allies would we... |

No, not even an outcry of dissaproval.
I was quite astonished (but pleased) to read of this visit.
The plight of the Chechens is being quietly ignored by USA/UK in return for Russia's silence on Afganistan, Iraq, and the next one, leaving Putin's lies about Chechnya largely unopposed in the west.
If the Chechens are given a platform to speak throughout the west, i would very much hope that there would be no more attrocities like Beslan, which was done to gain world-wide media attention.
It is sadly true, however, that many, many times more Chechen children have been, and are being killed by the Russians. |
