| Quote: | Beckett dismisses Iraq claims
Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett has dismissed as "complete nonsense" claims by former UN chief weapons inspector Hans Blix that, aside from Saddam Hussein's fall, everything in Iraq since the invasion has been a disaster.
Speaking ahead of the fourth anniversary of the start of the war, Mrs Beckett said: "It might be what most people think, but it's complete nonsense. I'm really quite surprised at Hans Blix saying something so foolish as well as so negative."
She insisted there had been "a massive amount of change" in Iraq, including democratic elections and infrastructure improvements.
But she conceded that parts of the country remained "terribly dangerous" and that there was "a real risk" the Iraqi government would not be able to defeat the insurgents.
Mr Blix said last week that he believed the occupation of Iraq, overall, had been a complete failure.
"I think everything in Iraq after the invasion has been a tragedy. The only positive thing, I think, is the disappearance of Saddam Hussein," he added.
Interviewed on BBC1's Politics Show, Mrs Beckett insisted: "I do think there are much better prospects for Iraq than people today want to admit."
She continued: "It's quite remarkable the amount of change and improvement that there has been which we never, ever hear about. That not to say there's not still a terribly dangerous security situation in some parts of Iraq...but we never hear about the things that have gone better.
"The worse case scenario is that they are able to overcome the wish of that minority to destroy, either because they're people who don't have any care for ordinary Iraqis or their lives, or because it's just extremely difficult. I mean that is obviously a real risk and a real problem.
"But the Iraqi government and the people of Iraq, I believe, are becoming increasingly aware of the danger that this presents to them and increasingly determined to tackle it."

Does she actually believe the crap that she is talking. How can hundreds of innocent Iraqis getting killed almost on a daily basis be considered anything but an unmitigated disaster?
Hans Blix is a highly respected international figure who knows more about Iraq than Beckett could ever imagine. I think I know who I would sooner believe.
The more Labour try to deny the fact that Iraq has been a complete and utter illegal c**k-up, the more it annoys me. Like it or not, the decision they took along with some of their Westminster colleagues and against the back-drop of widespread public opposition, has led to Iraqis having to deal with murder and destruction on a daily basis.
