Mixed emotions have been stirred after Highland Council's decision to refer to the Isle of Skye by its romantic Gaelic title - Eilean a'Cheo.
It means the Misty Isle, while the direct Gaelic translation of the Isle of Skye is an t-Eilean Sgiathanach.
The council said the change has only been made in terms of its local authority ward name.
However, some Skye residents fear it will lead to confusion, while others have welcomed it.
Skye, which is ward number 11, was one of three changed for the elections on Thursday.
Mid Ross is now known as Dingwall and Seaforth and East Sutherland is East Sutherland and Edderton.
Anne Healey, who runs a bed and breakfast in Uig, fears Eilean a' Cheo could lead to confusion.
She told Radio 4's Today programme: "The island gets many, many tourists. They won't have a clue where that is. It's just going to ruin the whole island I think."
DNA expert Professor Bryan Sykes, who bought a former home of acclaimed Gaelic poet Sorley MacLean, welcomed the use of Gaelic.
The professor of human genetics at the University of Oxford, who has lived on the isle for seven years, told BBC Scotland: "The Western Isles has done that for a number of years so I do think that it is preserving the cultural identity of places like Skye.
"It is extremely important in an age of modernisation, not just the Gaelic language and its other aspects such as the Mod and song, to maintain the diversity of the British Isles." |
Interesting and personally I'm all for places reverting back to their original names.
Though I gather the Mirror and the Telegraph trhink it's barmy. Thats a shock.

Me too, but the question here is, which is the correct name for Skye?
I have always belived it to be An t-Eilean Sgiathanach, and that Eilean a'Cheo was more of a nickname.
Still, whichever they've chosen it's in Gàidhlig and good news.

I also totally back the official name change, but why can't they consult a bit more widely before they make these sort of changes. It should be An t-Eilean Sgiathanach.
The people moaning about this are a joke though. Do they really think the English version of the name will be banned? Or that it won't be used in English language literature? It's purely anti-Gaelic sentiment without reason. |

I do not care for Mr George Murray at all. It will end no doubt in discomfort within the community again if himself has his way. Would he only be satisfied when all have turned their backs on the language? Apparently so. The council are not blameless in this matter, confusion rules OK; but since when has himself been elected? Perhaps he should try for office, no doubt he would succeed with all the support he has. Aye right.

See what the Scottish place names expert have to say.
There's an very active Scotplacename group under Yahoo. ...
scotplace@yahoogroups.co.uk
By all means, use the original Gaelic or Welsh meanings, but get it right.
