|
|
The SFA have said that they definitely won't be participating in any British team in the London Olympics. However they say they won't stand in the way of the FA should they want to play. The Welsh FA seem to be saying the same. So there could be an England team playing under the British name.
In response, the SNP are re-iterating calls for a Scottish Olympic team.
There is a poll attached to the BBC article asking "Should Scotland have its own football team at the 2012 Olympics?" http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/4427782.stm?display=1. At the moment it is 54% to 46% in favour.
You can also support the campaign for a Scottish Olympic team at http://www.c-scot.org/

Scottish Parliament Motions
16th November 2005
Michael Matheson (SNP): Scottish Football TeamThat the Parliament condemns the British Olympic Association (BOA) on its attempts to undermine the Scottish Football Association (SFA); notes its latest stunt of an internet survey which it claims demonstrates that a majority of Scots support the idea of a GB football team; notes that the survey results included responses from Cumbria and the Isle of Man, demonstrating the BOAs need for a lesson in Scottish geography; further notes that in total only 90 Scots responded to the survey, highlighting that this was nothing more than a political stunt orchestrated by the BOA; supports the SFA and the majority of Scottish football fans, including the tartan army, who wish Scotland to maintain an independent international football team, and calls on the BOA to focus on organising a successful London Olympics and to respect the decision of the SFA.
Supported by Roseanna Cunningham, Rob Gibson, Jim Mather and Christine Grahame. |

This is a clever ploy by the SNP - because if Labour try and disagree with it the SNP can ask them their justification for their voting against a Scottish Olympic team in general.
clever move _________________ "Every single person on this planet is unique. Just like everyone else..." - Random Guy in Edinburgh Pub

| The Welsh FA have also declared that they will not be participating in a GB football team (for the same reasons as the SFA ). Good news. |

| So that leaves England and NI. Not much of a 'British' team. In fact despite what the SFA and Welsh FA say - can England (is there any chance of any NI players - other than in a token manner - actually featuring?) really go ahead and play a team under the British banner? |

yes they can - the BOA decides who represents GB in the olympics.
Also - it's questionable whether NI can actually participate in this - given their athletes can only participate under the GB banner if the Republic of Irleand gives the go ahead - so England could be going themselves on this. _________________ "Every single person on this planet is unique. The won't ever give up until they get what they want.
They will use every tactic possible - bribary, blackmail, propaganda but we shouldn't expect anything less. We should promote our own Scottish Olympic Team instead http://www.c-scot.org/ |

apparently the first poll and admin costs they incured came to over £1200 - so they could justifiably have already spent it.
I think they will however be taking time over their next move. The first one was very well calculated and they sent out the right sort of message that very few could realistically criticise. They'll be biding their time no doubt - I think we'll hear a lot more from them in Jan/Feb time. _________________ "Every single person on this planet is unique. | They did say that the money raised wouldn't be used to cover previous costs. I do trust that they have good plans for it, it would just be nice to kept up to date. The blog on their website seems to have ground to a halt. |

what a quote from this guy on the TA forums,
| Quote: | | I can see us being awarded the Commonwealth Games to try and take the wind out of the sails of a Scottish Olympic team. And of course because it would be in Glasgow the building of a new stadium would in no way help us in a future bid for the European football Championships. All they would need would be enormous overruns on the cost of the stadium for a perfect political manoeuvre. |
A lot of sense in that. Also a lot of cynicism - but hey we're used to that now. _________________ "Every single person on this planet is unique. Just like everyone else..." - Random Guy in Edinburgh Pub
