Hi everyone,

I've just joined. I'm Scottish, from Edinburgh, temporarily living in Englandshire because of work, although I'll be back within a year or two, never to make the mistake of leaving again! Nothing like living in England in a world cup year to make you want to live in an independent Scotland Mad

This forum looks fun, I look forward to contributing!

Lord Pitsligo wrote "Nothing like living in England in a world cup year to make you want to live in an independent Scotland" - tell me about it. Living and working in London in 1966, the year of an alleged English "victory", was unbearable.

I remember having a real sense of fear that England might actually win the World Cup. I was terrified of the prospect!

It did feel like I was being stalked by an entire nation. A couple of the people in my office asked me if I was supporting England. Then they got stroppy saying that I should support them because they'd support Scotland. I replied by saying when I choose a foreign team to support, I usually choose one that stands a chance of winning and that I was supporting Germany. Then they got nasty and made comments with the word "jock" in them and stormed off in the huff.

A lot of it was quite good natured though. There was a sweepstake in the office and they guy who got Trinidad and Tobago became my best friend. I gave him all sorts of encouraging and supportive words when they came to play England. Laughing

I did however get most of them to agree that Irish fans turning up at the world cup to support the Ivory Coast to the total confusion of the Ivory Coast fans simply because the Irish flag is a mirror image of the Ivory Coast flag was a lot more fun and interesting than supporting England!

Didn't you used to wear a tie when you were in London, Dave?

Radge Jougal asked "Didn't you used to wear a tie when you were in London, Dave?"

No, not usually.

During the twelve years that I lived in London, I was working as a bricklayer. Bricklayers aren't expected to wear a tie for working on building sites. And I certainly didn't usually wear one when I wasn't working!
