Don't be flattered, I'm just a pedant and the author is irrelevant.

We probably agree that violence against the citizens of one's own country, for whatever reason, internal unrest, political dissent, food shortages, election results, is often the only means to protect the majority of citizens from a minority bent on disrupting and destabilizing the government. As Phillip Agee wrote in his infamous books about the CIA, fomenting unrest by the use of paid and unwitting agents is a favorite tactic of other governments to interfere in the internal policies of an unfriendly nation.
AT base however these movements are always driven by business and profits, witness Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Palestine, China, Tibet, Viet Nam, Cuba, etc. While many people are willing to buy into the notion that encouraging business enterprise is the route to national prosperity, and there is certainly abundant evidence that is true, the ethical question becomes at what price and over whose spilled blood? It is certainly common knowledge in any economics textbook you care to pick up that wars always result in immense prosperity for certain groups within a nation. Providing they are able to win or at least stave off defeat and occupation. In order to convince citizens to give up their children's lives and accept additional tax burdens to pay for war, a propaganda campaign is always required to cast the matter in ideological and moral terms. |

I read somewhere that over sixty percent of the population has sought psychiatric help or counselling at one time or another. (This presumably includes just seeing their GP about psychological problems.) That figure of over sixty percent means I'm in the minority in never having done so.
Radge Jougal quotes me:

You missed a bit out, Radge.
"I went to visit her when she was in Liff Hospital, Dundee. She was pregnant and her junkie husband had left her for a sixteen year old girl so she slashed her wrists as a 'cry for help'. Not too long after that, she managed to pull herself together, and she was soon back practicing as a psychiatrist, and dealing with patients, instead of being a patient. Lovely lassie, as a friend, but you'd have to be nuts to go and see her professionally."
My relationship with her was purely as a friend. Well, that and we had quite similar views on politics, libertarian socialist, anti-war, etc etc. Like I said, my attitude was that you'd have to be nuts to go see her professionally. |
